Working as a Crisis Intervention Counselor for an urban school district, I have extensive experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidality, self esteem and other issues.
Hi! Whether this is your first attempt or your last effort to find help, I am happy you’re here. Having worked in the school setting the last 10 years, I know that times are really tough for our kids. As parents, we may not know how to handle the things our kids go through, or even understand. I want to help by providing a safe and nurturing environment for children and youth to process their emotions and teach them healthy coping skills to get them through life’s difficult times.

Life can be hard and unfair from time to time. My desire is to provide the skills, clarity and a sense of control when life is turned upside down. Counseling is not just a job for me but, a passion. I enjoy helping those who are ready to move forward but may not know how or feel like they are unable. Each person is different, and I enjoy the challenge of working through what seems like impossible hurdles to clients at the time. After the hard work of investing in oneself, clients often enjoy feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction when their lives change for the better as they overcome those hurdles.

I believe in counseling and the therapeutic relationship. I recognize it as a very personal process and will do my best to assist you. Sometimes in life we need a little extra help, and that’s okay. Counseling can act as a resource to help manage the commotion in our lives. I approach my clients through the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because it is evidence-based, and it helps challenge the patterns and cognitive distortions that have been established over time. I also use a person-centered approach to meet the client’s needs.

Intervention Therapists

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
