It can happen to anyone. Life is going along just fine, and then before you realize what happened, you find yourself in a tough situation you never expected. Coping with it has been far from easy, to say the least. You're not alone! If it's a traumatic event, if it's ongoing circumstances that impact your mood and overall functioning, perhaps I can help. I have specialized training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, as well as Solutions-Focused Therapy. I use a holistic approach; considering the whole person in their environment.

**ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS** I have been in private practice for 8 years but I have a total of 17 years of counseling experience. During that 17 years, I have worked with several people from all walks of life with a wide range of struggles such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, etc. and it's always gratifying when they find relief and their symptoms begin to improve and, for many, disappear altogether.

Hi, I'm Melissa Galica, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 5 years of experience in the state of Texas. I typically work with young adults 18-26, mothers (prenatal, postpartum), the LGBTQIA+ community, and those suffering from religious trauma. As a counselor, the therapies I use often include CBT, DBT, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy. I hold the strong belief that people are perfectly imperfect. They are beautiful and spectacular but can also become stuck, unable to live a fulfilling life. That’s where I come in.

I am currently taking new clients for appointments. My clients say they can tell I genuinely care. My authentic, non-judgemental, easy-going personality allows for comfortable conversation. My life experience (married 25+ yrs. w/ 5 children) helps me relate to the everyday struggles of life. Unfortunately, there are seasons of life which are extremely difficult. I offer Animal Assisted Therapy in Counseling for clients who would feel more comfortable and relaxed working with a therapist who has a canine partner. I take a large variety of clients, but I have the most experience working with children. I believe that everyone has access to a happy life and, in many cases, that involves working with a therapist to achieve that goal.

If you're looking for help, my hope is that I'm able to provide healing, empowerment, and a safe place to be heard. Most of my experience is in working with military, couples, students, and adolescents who struggle with addiction, grief, trauma, parenting, and relationships. I have a sincere passion to just "be" with people and offer support, a new perspective, and possibly even some challenges. I am also EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization, and Reprocessing) trained to work with anxiety, addiction, trauma, and PTSD.

“Everybody has problems, right? But why do I feel so (hopeless, helpless, anxious, afraid, overwhelmed, lonely…. Fill in the blank)?” Sometimes life is just hard. There are moments when we realize that we can no longer manage all the balls we have been juggling. Other times life just smacks us in the face, out of the blue. While there are moments that everything seems to be going great but we just can’t let go of the gnawing anxiety in our stomach. Good news! You don’t have to feel this way forever.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
