The client is the expert on their life, and I believe in the collaborative nature of the therapeutic alliance between the client and therapist. As a team, we will come up with interventions to change the process and patterns of the way you think, feel, and behave. In my thousands of hours in the field, I have witnessed countless clients improve using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) through an informed trial-and-error process. CBT has the most evidence-based research validating its efficacy and presumes that the mind, body, and social environment are connected in a very sensitive ecosystem.

I also recognize the connection between thoughts, behaviors, and actions and utilize a variety of strategies from Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Life is hard. Without healthy coping skills and supportive person to speak with, people begin to feel stressed, overwhelmed, and develop complicated feelings and thoughts that can manifest into serious mental health problems. My ideal client is someone who is seeking support and a listening ear from a nonjudgmental and down to earth professional. I assist my clients by connecting their behaviors, thoughts, and feelings towards new ways to think and respond to stressors. Therapy can be uncomfortable at times and change is hard; but with a supportive therapist, together we can move towards stability and life can be a little easier.

Along with EMDR, I take a holistic, person centered, empathetic, integrative, LGBTQ+ affirming approach utilizing ACT, DBT, EFT (tapping), and somatic work.
EMDR Trained -Certified Trauma Professional: Welcome to my Psychology Today page! The effects of trauma are varied and can show up as anxiety, depression, dissociation, grief, intrusive negative thoughts, disturbing memories and dreams, engagement in unhealthy relationship patterns, and low self-esteem. What you are experiencing is a NORMAL reaction to trauma, and healing is possible. As a former educator, I have found that developing an understanding of the effects of trauma on the nervous system is a good way to begin fostering self-compassion, which is the first step in developing resilience and beginning the healing process.

My training is in EMDR, CBT, and DBT with emphasis on new coping skills to replace destructive and ineffective thinking and behavior.
I specialize in anxiety, depression, addictive patterns, eating disorder treatment including Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia, Anorexia and both Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. I am certified in EMDR and well trained in working with trauma and PTSD. If you find yourself stuck in the same self defeating patterns or constantly overreact in anger, I can help. Poor sleep, drinking too much, raging, binge eating/excessive dieting, or over medicating can dull emotional pain but there are more effective ways to cope and reduce stress to find a life that offers more peace, joy, and healthier relationships.

I utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help achieve self-awareness and the ability to regulate emotions, distress tolerance and help with interpersonal relationships.
Just because the past didn't turn out like you wanted it, doesn't mean your future can't be better than you've ever imagined! I know that everybody comes to a point in their life where the wish they could do things over. I believe in improving who you are in order to improve your quality of life, it's never too late!

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
