I practice counseling from a trauma informed, culturally responsive, and somatically oriented lens. I believe that we experience our stressors and traumas at the intersection of our physical, cultural, and relational realities. I view each individual as the expert of their experience, including children and teens, and collaborate with individuals and families to support meaningful change. I believe that we heal best when we can attune to our emotional and somatic experience of the present moment in the context of safe relationships and work to create a secure space for processing the past and reorienting to the present and future.

It is not always easy to reach out and ask for help with areas of our lives we feel we need support with. Sharing details of our personal lives can leave us feeling vulnerable. I appreciate you trusting me to be a part of your journey and together we can develop the skills needed to manage the issues and challenges you may be facing.

You tell yourself, "If I just accomplish one more thing, I'll finally be proud of who I am." You wake up, get dressed, and go through the motions of life, but inside, you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and burned out. Lately, the constant chatter in your mind has left you exhausted. The hurt, disappointment, and grief have made it hard for you to embrace who you are. This isn’t where you thought you'd be at this stage of your life. The storm has been brewing for far too long, and despite your efforts to navigate it, the path ahead remains unclear. PAUSE. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and let’s fast forward.

Navigating intimate relationships can be challenging. Remember that feeling you had when you went out with your crush for the first time? You laughed at each other's jokes, you noticed how much you had in common, and you thought, "this is my person!" While it's wonderful when things are going smoothly, the reality is that the initial shininess eventually fades and challenges are inevitable in every relationship. Including that "perfect couple" you keep comparing yourself to, everyone will encounter disagreements and misunderstandings. Life is imperfect and messy, and we are all doing our best to manage.

You are light. You are wisdom. You are deserving of experiencing moments of joy and relief. Pause....take a deep breathe. Exhale. That moment belongs to you. It is autonomous and free. Sometimes our walk through life can feel tiring. There are moments where we need support in carrying that weight as it can be confusing to understand all that we feel and why we are feeling it. Thank you for the moral courage to be here today investing in you. I work primarily with women who identify as BIPOC however I also work with men & older teens who identify as BIPOC. I am bilingual and provide therapy in English and Spanish.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
