My introduction to mental health was through my own sobriety (31 years as of now). I experienced anxiety, depression and all the trappings that come with surviving addiction. I began to volunteer and found that I wanted to work in this field. I am a Marine Corps Veteran and retired from federal service to pursue private practice last year. I am married to a saint of a woman for 33 years (in a row), have one son and daughter in law who have given us two wonderful granddaughters.

Do you struggle with substance use affecting every aspect of your day-to-day life? Maybe there's damage to your relationships, ability to function, job, or career. Do you feel trapped by the inability to freely choose your thoughts, emotions, or actions? Is getting through the day without self-medicating difficult or impossible? Do you wonder if it’s even possible that your experience of life could be better? Now more than ever, so many people feel anxious, overwhelmed, or uncertain about retaking control of their lives because they don't know how; or fear keeps blocking their best intentions. No wonder you’re so stressed.

I have advanced certificates in mindfulness and yoga, and integrate evidence-informed mindfulness, movement, play, creativity, and trauma-informed approaches.
When I graduated from high school, I wanted to be a therapist. However, life has many different paths, and it is only in my 50s that I am now finally pursuing that dream. With multifaceted experiences on my way to “growing up,” I understand the value of integrating various practices to meet the needs and goals of my clients—no matter your age. I am skilled in working with people of all ages (preschool thru senior) and backgrounds in resolving challenges and building a toolbox toward living your best life.

My postmodern holistic orientation allows me to incorporate a wide array of therapy models, including humanistic, postmodern, psychoeducational, emotionally focused, and mindfulness therapeutic techniques.
I am a relationship counselor who specializes in working with high-conflict couples. We believe that our behavior patterns in relationships are often shaped by experiences from childhood. For instance, a couple that is excited to get married may find themselves constantly arguing and feeling rejected. I can help track the cycle of conflict (Emotional Family Therapy by Sue Johnson) connecting/contrasting the secondary and primary emotions and noting the attachment impact of the couple.

I also use a bunch of other techniques (think CBT, EMDR techniques, mindfulness) to help you get you there.
Hi! I'm Kati! I can't wait to have a conversation with you! Have you ever struggled with food? Or struggled with feeling really terribly about your body? I get it. Unfortunately, it's all too common and it can feel like an endless fight with yourself. I have been working with individuals who struggle with food and their bodies in a variety of capacities for over ten years. I have helped people move from a place of constant negativity about food and their bodies to a place of acceptance and, if not peace, definitely more peace than before. I can help you, too.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
