We are now living in times as difficult as any the world has seen in the past 100 years. I am committed to supporting the emotional growth of adults of all ages experiencing significant life changes. Through my work as a counselor, a professor of psychology, distance educator, and social science researcher, I know that empathy, science, reason, and action are all needed to help people overcome the pain and trauma disrupting their lives. I have worked with military veterans from three wars, clients dealing with injuries or illness, health care professionals, and parents striving to come to terms with difficult issues.

From my heart to your heart - to the heart of the matter. Whether its trauma, abuse, abandonment, grief, addiction, or the end of a significant relationship, we all have unfinished business to sort through. Individuals usually know what to do when they enter into therapy, but anxiety, fear, depression, and maladaptive patterns of coping keep them stuck in repetitive cycles of unhappiness. More than a diagnosis, you are a hu man being hoping to reclaim that better part of yourself. Through guidance in a nurturing environment, personal growth and self acceptance are possible.

I believe every person has an innate motivation to move towards the best version of themselves. I view my position in the therapeutic relationship as supporting a person through what may be a very difficult time so that the individual or family can move forward. I view therapy from a person-centered perspective, meaning an individual or family leads decisions regarding change. What I find most important in counseling is the therapeutic relationship between client and counselor. I nurture this relationship by providing a safe space for people to explore their deep personal struggles while I remain nonjudgmental and empathetic.

I utilize many different approaches drawing from Jungian, Hu manistic, Cognitive, and Meditative psychologies.
Anxiety, depression, and personal conflict are not always signs of illness, neurosis, or flaws of development, or character. Many times healthy individuals find themselves in internal struggles that are related to important growth points in their lives. These are periods of potential growth based in crises of values, spirituality, and expansion of self. Such crises are reflected in questions of a deeper, spiritual, or existential nature which the individual is asking, or in general non-specific feelings of unease, dissatisfaction, or depression. If you feel you are facing such struggles, then I may be able to help you.

I believe that every person is immeasurably valuable, unique, and made in the image of the Creator. Sometimes having a compassionate therapist who will create a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to share your emotional burdens can be the greatest catalyst for personal change and growth. I am committed to giving my clients 100% of my attention, energy, and effort, because you are loved, valued, important to God, and to me as a therapist. Taking the first step of reaching out to a counselor can seem like the most difficult, but it may also be the decision that leads to life-changing growth, healing, and discovery.

Seeking help and being open about your vulnerabilities requires genuine courage. You might feel that seeking therapy makes you weak, or that it means you’re “giving up.” In reality, the opposite is true. Therapy is not giving up - it's about refusing to give up. It’s about finding the strength to keep going. As a counselor, my goal is to foster a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can be heard and help you discover the path you truly want to follow. I aim to provide compassion with everything you’ve faced until now, and hope to empower you in your journey of self-discovery and eventually, self-acceptance.

I have a long history of working with children, adolescents, and their families. While I believe that our past does shape who we are, it does not define what our future has to be. I have worked in various settings which include foster care, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, and school based mental health. I work to create an environment where clients feel safe, comfortable, and calm which allows them to grow in the areas that they need to so that they can live their best life.

I am trained in Gott man couples therapy & Dispute Resolution, so couples & families welcome.
I focus on working with adults, couples, and teens. We know that many of our challenges are often connected somehow. Problems can become entangled, which makes them really hard to manage and resolve. And when we take notice, we see how so many aspects and relationships in our lives are affected. I want to learn who you are, listen to your story, and understand what you need from this process. Gaining insight and learning effective skills can help you handle almost anything life throws at you. Getting started can seem hard, but always remember: Every wonderful journey begins with the first step.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
