Female Therapists in McKinney, TX
As a biracial Black clinician, I see people from a variety of backgrounds but predominately help Christian women of color heal from family wounds and social trauma by creating a safe space that allows you to be your genuine self while feeling heard and validated. Are you frustrated with your relationships (out-of-control children, conflict with your spouse)? Is the chaos you are experiencing negatively affecting other areas in your life? Have you gained professional success but feel like you are living a lie or sometimes a nightmare behind closed doors? Perhaps you see painful family patterns from the past creeping into the present.

I am a mother of 2 boys, ages 21 and 25. I truly enjoyed every minute of raising them, even the hard moments. My oldest son is now married and in Seattle with his wife. My youngest is the fireball who has DiGeorge syndrome. It was challenging many times, but I have been his advocate through his entire life and still am to this day. I am now an empty nester with just my sweet dog Dixon, an American Eskimo.

Do you feel as though you will never have a healthy relationship: with your family? with your significant other? with yourself? with food? Do you struggle to love and appreciate the person staring back at you in the mirror? Do you feel stuck in habits that result in self-sabotage and feelings of shame? Do you feel unworthy or undeserving of stability or contentment, so you turn to unhealthy eating patterns, toxic relationships, or substances? Maybe the trauma you have experienced has not been managed effectively and you don't have the tools to heal and feel relief.

I believe that our past experiences shape how we think about things. If we heal old wounds, we improve our chances to feel more successful in all areas of life. I believe the ability to learn is a necessary tool for all individuals to maintain throughout life; whether you are a student in school or the CEO of a global corporation, it is essential to continue learning about yourself. When we have a solid understanding of why we think, act, and feel the way we do, then we set ourselves up to improve our relationships, especially the one with ourselves.

Exhausted. Hoping to have a good day with your child, but hope ran out when he had another tantrum. Praying for some relief. The yelling and screaming and the anxiety are becoming unmanageable. Just one good day. That's not asking too much, is it? Lots of advice but nothing has worked. Or it works for a while and then it goes back to the same old thing. Fear of what might happen means staying home most of the time. Surely there is a better way. For you and your child.

You can have freedom from your past, connection in the present, and hope for your future. I provide a safe, supportive environment for you to unravel the internal knots that trauma or anxiety have created so that you can reclaim a sense of peace, vitality, and purpose. I work with adults who want to resolve issues that have kept them from living fully in the present, whether those issues stem from past pain or more recent struggles. I also work with high school seniors who are experiencing anxiety about their future. They will learn to face decisions with confidence and practice the skills that will be most valuable beyond school.

As an African American therapist, I've chosen to focus my practice on the mental well-being of minorities. Why? Because I've lived it, and I know the unique challenges we face. It's not just about therapy; it's about creating a safe haven where you can unpack the layers of your experiences, unapologetically be yourself, and embrace the strength within. So, why did I become a therapist? Well, life threw its fair share of curveballs my way, and I learned the power of seeking support. I understand the constant juggling act of trying to be there for everyone else; its a delicate dance and I'm here to be a safety net.

Often when looking for a therapist, we feel like we are at our wits' end, not knowing how to help our child or ourselves. It may feel like the tentacles of our stress keep encroaching in on more and more areas of our life. Therapy does not mean you have failed; it means life has gotten too difficult to go on without additional support, and you are courageous enough to ask for help.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
