I am also EMDR trained.
Sometimes life may be moving too fast and adjustment to these unexpected changes can be difficult. When these challenges and undesirable stressors occur, we may need a little extra support and clarity. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, abuse histories, issues with self-esteem, and family conflict.

EMDR is a treatment for all levels of trauma.
The way we look at and think about our lives has a profound impact on the way we experience our lives. It is necessary to shift our thoughts in order to effectively relieve anxiety, depression, and our inability to move forward from past disappointments and traumatic experiences. I utilize Cognitive Therapy, EMDR, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, and Internal Family Systems. These approaches are offered within a setting of compassion and nonjudgment. I have found the integration of mental, spiritual, and physical experience important in improving psychological health and helping people connect with their own inner guidance.

You can have freedom from your past, connection in the present, and hope for your future. I provide a safe, supportive environment for you to unravel the internal knots that trauma or anxiety have created so that you can reclaim a sense of peace, vitality, and purpose. I work with adults who want to resolve issues that have kept them from living fully in the present, whether those issues stem from past pain or more recent struggles. I also work with high school seniors who are experiencing anxiety about their future. I am Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Certified and EMDR trained.
Hey, most people call me Jess. I believe counseling is a mutual relationship. I view each person I see as the expert in their lives and I am in the passenger seat. My approach to counseling is holistic; every person is different, therefore every counseling approach does not work for everyone. I will take the time to work with you to find what works best for you. Since everyone is different; if a client and I do not mesh well, I will help them to find a counselor who works better for them.

I have found that my training in EMDR and the Flash Technique have been tremendously helpful to most of the individuals I work with.
There are a number of reasons that we as humans seek the counsel of others; however, the most important reason to me is seeking growth. We all encounter struggles and challenges and face a series of choices. I believe it is in our nature to question our choices and it is those questions that I hope to help individuals explore while on their journey. I am especially interested in the question of how to connect meaningfully with others, as I believe this is the cornerstone of human interactions and relationships.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
