Part of being human means that at some point, we all come face to face with some sort of difficulty. This is why I believe that counseling can be beneficial for anyone and everyone. Having support can make navigating life's challenges manageable. Making the decision to seek help is already a huge step, so you should be proud of yourself!

Our past experiences can have a significant impact on our present day problems. Unresolved childhood trauma can present itself in adulthood as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, avoidance, self-sabotage, insecurity, fear of abandonment, low self-worth, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, and difficulty dealing with confrontation or conflict. Trauma can also present itself physically in the form of body aches and pains, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance. Therapy can be highly beneficial in healing from trauma, managing stress, and building resilience.

Is your relationship/marriage on the verge of driving you crazy? Do you say one thing but they often hear something else? Do you struggle to resolve conflict effectively? You need help that actually works. You cannot get life right if you get relationships wrong. And if you learned it wrong you will live it wrong. With over a decade of experience, I can help you take your relationship from 'surviving' to 'thriving.'

Do you feel overwhelmed? Find that you have reached a standstill in your life? Seeking a change in your relationships? Know that you have the ability to ask for help and for someone to provide a helping hand. As humans, we just want to be heard, seen, loved, and respected. These are the nuances when it comes to having human relationships and experiences with our loved ones. It is human to want and need connection. It is safe and easy to stay within our comfort zones, places that seem good for the moment, but we cannot grow here; the reality is that something has to change.

Trauma is what happens, but grief is what lingers. You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just exhausted. If so, there is a high probability that your heart has been broken from some sort of loss either recently or long ago. You may have experienced the loss of a loved one, a divorce, or the break-up of a romantic or important relationship in your life. You may have developed an awareness that your life is not as happy or fulfilling as you want it to be. Regardless of the hurt you’ve experienced, you know how you feel, and it probably isn’t good. You also know you want to feel better, but you're not really sure where to start.

Life comes in waves. We all have our stressful moments and difficult situations but, at times, our ability to ride the waves falters. Maybe you are noticing that you haven’t been feeling your best recently or even for a long time now. You may be noticing your relationships with others beginning to become strained. Or you may have lost someone important in your life and found yourself struggling to cope. Sometimes it might feel as though you’re alone with your struggles or that people do not truly see you.

I empower people to remove those roadblocks, promoting interpersonal trust, respect and love.
Are your relationships full of conflict and disconnection? Does stress throw you into crisis? Do you worry about your child making and keeping friends? I'm dedicated to helping my clients conquer these, and many other issues. In addition to traditional office-based psychotherapy, I shifted in 2009 "from the office to the pasture" to specialize in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. In partnering with horses, I observe profound shifts in relationships, communication, confidence, and emotional regulation. The Equine work is "grounded", so no horsemanship background is required. Conveniently schedule online at therapyappointment.com

I take a collaborative approach to counseling, and am concerned largely with interpersonal dynamics and the ways that they impact our personal development and overall well-being.
I have always believed that healthy interpersonal communication is one of the most dynamic and invaluable resources that we have at our disposal. In counseling, as in life, I aim to cultivate a practice of empathetic wellness intervention in service of creating clear and coherent communication across race, class, gender and sexuality, while also prioritizing community, accessibility, and holistic wellness. I enjoy working with interpersonal relationships, familial trauma, anxiety, guilt/shame, and identity formation, and am especially interested in working with women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ populations.

There are moments in each of our lives when circumstances may seem too overwhelming for us to handle them on our own. Maybe you find yourself in the midst of relationship troubles, grief over a loss, depression, anxiety, or a tough life transition. Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
