I have worked for family violence shelters, substance abuse treatment facilities, and the local mental health agency.
Life is challenging, and sometimes it can be overwhelming. When you are dealing with depression, anxiety, or trauma, it is OK to reach out for help. All of us need that from time to time. I can provide you with a space to step back and look at where you have been and where you are headed. I can give you the support you need to make the changes that will put you back on the road to a better life.

My goal is to help you make the best of your unique life circumstances and work towards being the person you want to be. I work with mood and anxiety disorders of all kinds, and also enjoy working with people navigating major life transitions, people in substance use recovery, dieting recovery, and those setting boundaries with complex families of origin. Prior to becoming a therapist I worked in public policy for over a decade, and have a deep understanding of the societal structures in place that feel immovable, and yet greatly impact our mental health.

We all want to do better at something and to make positive change. But it can be stressful and it can feel overwhelming. Many of us have tried but cannot seem to make it last, or maybe we just don’t know where to start. If you feel that way, I would love to help. My passion is for empowering you. I want to help you better manage your feelings and help you make those difficult choices – to help you cut through whatever stands between you and the person you really want to be.

I am a licensed professional counselor. As a Korean-born woman, I have a unique cultural background but was raised in France. I have made the U.S.-Mexico border my home for the past two decades. I am a very effective counselor because I have the inner gift to connect with my clients very quickly. This facilitates them to disclose a lot of information they have never shared with anyone. I treat many disorders, including depression, anxiety, codependence, trauma, dysfunctional childhood, marital issues, self-esteem, anger, bullying, stress, and career.

My clients often turn to substance use, negative self-talk, avoidance, and impulsivity to deal with intense emotions and they spiral from there.
We all begin the therapeutic journey with our own set of strengths and needs. Sometimes our uniqueness promotes creativity, new perspectives, and collaboration. Other times our uniqueness can be terminal; leading to emptiness, feeling disconnected from self and others, and beliefs that mental health treatment may work for other people, but it won’t work for you. Therapy is not about “getting over” events and issues; it’s about understanding your triggers and learning how to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so that you can move forward and continue to build a fulfilling life.

Purpose, passion, and connection are almost always lost in substance abuse and can be found again with simple interventions.
For those with alcohol use disorder, I use the principles of evidence-based alcohol sobriety and moderation techniques with or without medication. Clients will learn to moderate their alcohol use to achieve life-long moderation or learn how to achieve sobriety if they choose. For those struggling with substances other than alcohol, I offer CBT, DBT and MI to assist in achieving sobriety. This is your journey and your choices, and my coaching/counseling style is to meet you where you are at, motivate you and help you find long-term solutions for substance abuse.

You’re here because you need help. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and relationship dysfunction can stifle and hide the person you truly are. You feel inhibited, pressured, and isolated, but throughout it all a a part of you knows that there is still something amazing within you. What stops you from being your authentic self when alone or around others? What stops you from knowing how to take care of yourself? This is what I can explore with you. I want to help you shed what is holding you back and illuminate pain that may be keeping you comfortably stagnant. I want the world to meet who you are.

I have hands on experience with issues of grief, addiction, LGBT, family and couples issues.
I work with people not diagnoses. First and foremost I want my clients to know that they are not on their own. I first began to study counseling psychology because I enjoy helping people. When a person comes into my office it is usually because they are in need of help. Through the use of various psychological techniques I strive to assist those who seek to find what they are looking for. I also offer HIPPA compliant video counseling for convenience.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
