I have experience working with all ages and for relational and clinical issues including: marriage, infidelity, trauma, grief, sexual abuse, physical abuse, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, divorce, personality disorders, ADHD and childhood concerns.
My goal for the counseling relationship is that you, the client, and I, the counselor, will develop trust with one another, work as a team to define and explore present problem situations, develop future goals for an improved life, and work toward those goals. While my counseling philosophies are informed by a biblical worldview, I will in no way pressure or require you to uphold my morals, values, or religious beliefs. As the client I respect your value/belief system and will ask that you inform how that is incorporated into counseling.

Jasmine specializes in working with eating disorders, adolescents, and grief.
Looking into the mirror of your life can be difficult. Be it your body changing or great loss, we are ever-evolving people, and sometimes we need help with making sense of the course of our lives. Often we get caught up in "the doing" of life to distract ourselves from the pain we are experiencing, but when you push your feelings underwater for too long, like a beach ball, they are bound to pop up. Sitting in the unrest of body image struggles, eating disorders, adolescence, and grief can be a daunting task. I know this personally and professionally and that's why I want to help.

Counseling requires a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. My goal for counseling is that you and I will understand and trust one another, identifying your goals and working to overcome whatever obstacles are in your way. I believe that anyone who seeks counseling does so because of a desire to live your best life, and my desire is to help you do just that. With over 20 years of experience as a licensed counselor, I will help you to move toward solutions that will bring about positive change. While my clinical training and biblical worldview inform my approach, your goals and needs are the priority of each session.

Are you missing the joy in your life? Do you struggle to find moments of fun with your family? What would it take for you to believe that you are capable of things that they haven't even dreamed of yet? Using a foundation of Narrative Therapy, I work to help you deconstruct the negative storylines that repeat in your head and provide you with the tools to begin the process of changing your chatter so that you can find your joy, no matter how young (or old!) you are.

One day I was asked if I could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I replied, “The power of healing. If I could take away other people’s burdens, then I feel that I have done what is desperately needed for the world.” In a world full of suffering and pain, we all seek to be seen and have our voices heard. However, finding someone you can trust and open up to can be difficult. This broken world is hard to not give up on, but I am here to tell you that you are not alone. I want to walk with you through your journey and help see you through it. Life can throw many trials our way, but you do not have to navigate it alone.

Do you find yourself wishing for better days? Have you lost interest in the things that once brought you joy? Are your basic responsibilities weighing you down? Life doesn't have to be about exhaustion and overwhelm day in and day out. We can work together to improve your current circumstances. I love listening to my client's stories and helping them put the pieces together. At times we may mix conversation with psychoeducation in coping skills, mindfulness, and meditation. Bravely sharing your story in counseling allows you a rare opportunity to be heard without judgment. This is a priceless opportunity to process your experience.

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
