My ideal client is someone who is recognizing the effect their mental health and/or substance use is having on their life and is looking for strategies to make a change. Their needs are help recognizing what the issues are and their goal is to find healthier ways to cope with their problems. They want to improve relationships and their quality of life and are willing to try new things to make that happen.

I especially like working with individuals that are seeking counseling for the first time, and I specialize in substance abuse disorders, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. It is my desire to help you discover new ways of thinking and acting so you can gain freedom from thoughts or patterns that are keeping you stuck. Using many practical and evidence-based techniques, I seek to help clients that are exhausted as they try to gain approval from others or are frustrated with their own unmet needs. I was once told, "Everyone has problems, but those who are successful in life are the ones who got help." I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor with a Masters degree from the University of North Texas. I truly enjoy helping others find personal success and healing. Prior to being in private practice, I spent four years as a counselor at Grapevine Valley Hope, a residential chemical dependency treatment center, helping adults begin to overcome their addictions to drugs and alcohol. My personal style is down-to-earth, non-judgmental & accepting but also direct.

I believe that everyone has the right to ask to seek mental health help as we do ask for physical help. Counseling personally helped me to know who I am and to enjoy my life by equipping me with valuable tools to navigate life's challenges. Because of the profound positive impact counseling had on my life, I am passionate about providing the same transformative support to others. Finally in general, I chose to become a counselor to advocate for better mental and emotional health awareness and to combat the stigma associated with seeking help.

Perhaps you’re at a point where you are frustrated and tired of starting over with a new therapist. You’re tired of telling your story over and over again and not experiencing any relief. You’re tired of taking all these medications and being numb. And you’re tired of your past trauma disrupting your everyday life. Perhaps you’re wondering if you’re ever going to heal and feel better. You CAN heal. The therapist’s job is to help facilitate the healing process that lies within you. To heal from trauma, you don’t have to talk about the details of what has happened to you (unless you find it helpful).

Whether you are working through past trauma, recent trauma, getting through rough patches, seeking greater self-satisfaction, or looking for encouragement on a spiritual awakening, I can provide support. Exploring these life issues begins with a relationship built on trust, respect, warmth, and humor. Therapy, at its core, is an exchange of energy between therapist and client, an energetic reciprocation to begin the healing process, which is paramount to guiding a client to embrace their authentic self. This is my approach to assisting others to move through and into a better version of themselves.

Life is stressful. Sometimes we just need to talk with someone who understands our fears and anxieties and who can give us another perspective. In therapy, you and I will work to build a relationship where you feel support and encouragement to explore the areas you desire to change. We will look at the meaning you have placed on certain areas of your life, as well as your strengths and abilities to address life situations.

So 2024 is here...hopefully better. But something still feels off. You're not nuts (yet) but you're stuck somewhere between stressed and emotional wreck. But we've got this. Happiness, success, fun & play are within reach. You just need to re-find your momentum in life, work, career & relationships. Are zero energy & zero motivation holding you back? Maybe some brain fog? Your struggle is admirable and it sucks. But misery IS optional. Let's start kicking back at life. End the negative thinking, let's learn different/better ways of thinking/behaving to get what you want in life. Surviving is just okay-but thriving is SO much better!

My style of therapy encompasses the idea of motivating through speaking your truth. I reach people with my honest, genuine, and real sense of intuition about challenges they face. My goal for clients is to increase personal awareness of problematic behaviors they want to change and then engage in finding new ways to incorporate change in their lives with struggling with power, control, depression, trauma, relationship problems, loss of identity, stillbirth, grief, and divorce. I completed my PhD through researching and treating emotion avoidance strategies with the population of individuals with PNES.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
