My experience is with adolescents and adult issues, including anxiety, grief, relationships, suicidal ideation, depression, anger, trauma and family conflict using EMDR and CBT.
I have been working with adolescents and parents in the school system for over 19 years as a school counselor, and have held my LPC license for over 14 years. I am an LPC supervisor. I enjoy working with adolescents, helping them to work through their issues, ranging from underachieving to relationship conflict (and everything in between). I also enjoy working with adults, helping them to understand their roles as parents so that they are better able to help support their children in a positive, healthy manner. In addition to parenting, I also provide marriage and family counseling.

Change is the only constant in life, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is easy. Pain or fear can be an indicator that something isn't working and it is time for change. Like most things worthwhile, change requires hard work. I love what I get to do which is guiding you through the process of change. Whatever your struggle, I'm here to work through it with you...you are not alone!

Do you struggle to manage the daily stressors of your everyday life? Or does something from your past keep coming up? Do you find that these concerns impact other areas of your life? Work? School? Relationships? Do you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or lost with how to move forward and live a happy and healthy life? Now more than ever, people feel anxious, overwhelmed, and uncertain about managing their relationships, careers, and lives. Pushing your needs away and not taking time for yourself can lead to long-term issues for your mind and body. I believe it should not be so hard to live a better life.

First, I would like to acknowledge your effort in reaching out to seek guidance. You have taken the first step in improving yourself. I understand it is hard when our initial expectations of how our life "should be" does not match what is happening in the moment. Many times, there are societal, familial and perhaps individual expectations that we feel obligated to fulfill. Sometimes these thoughts of a "normal" life interfere with what our true happiness could be, and this does need to be explored. Essentially, I would like to assist in shifting your perspective which will allow you to feel more balanced in your life.

My counseling style is compassionate and direct. I use CBT, solution focused, and mindfulness therapies to help resolve negative thoughts and emotions and work towards more realistic and positive self-assessment. It takes a great deal of courage to ask for help and I honor you for taking the first step! Many of us struggle silently with emotional pain, physical discomfort and racing thoughts related to anxiety, or lack of motivation due to depression. I believe everyone has the potential to learn new skills to manage symptoms, improve communication, self-motivate, and regain a sense of self-control.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
