My approach to treatment is an integrative approach using Cognitive Behavioral therapy as well as Mindfulness based therapies.
Is your anxiety keeping you from having peace in your life? Are your relationships suffering because of your mood? Has trauma kept you from living the life you desire? For over 30 years I have helped people make effective change in their lives with a variety of problems. I am best known for my skills in treating people who have difficult situations, feel out of control of their lives, and need more stability in their emotions and relationships. With the use of meditation, mindfulness skills, and behavioral changes we can work together to create a more balanced life, healthier relationships, and more joy and confidence.

I believe that mindfulness of self opens the door to more effective relationships and the ability to define coping skills and boundaries that protect and make change possible.
For many years I have had the privilege of joining my clients in the process of change. I work with individuals, couples, and families. A variety of issues are addressed. Examples include depression, anxiety, compulsive disorders, trauma, adjustment to change, loss, and self esteem. I work with the effects of addiction on the family. Women's issues hold a prominent place in my practice encompassing the stages of a woman's life, hormonal changes and transitions such as girlhood to womanhood, pregnancy, motherhood, menopause and empty nest.

Please note: I am providing telehealth only at this time. Say no and mean it! Learn to believe in yourself! Our own thoughts/beliefs can cause us to feel ineffective or incapable. Struggling with anxiety, anger or family of origin difficulties(controlling or distant parents), low self esteem/self worth and toxic family systems can affect our ability to see ourselves realistically or be self critical. This can negatively affect our mood. You can learn to control anxiety and thoughts with techniques, practice, changing your self talk and addressing beliefs about yourself.

Consider that the path to pursue your passions and dreams is actually within your reach. What if you could begin this process today, and no longer carry burdens from the past with you? Past traumatic experiences often leave an imprint on the mind/body in such a way that present-day stressors can easily trigger a recurrent emotional/physical stress response. Each environmental trigger validates an automatic physical stress response because the central nervous system is pre-set/pre-wired to be ON ALERT. Stress can be cumulative and create illness or a disease process over time (i.e., fibromyalgia, CFIDS, autoimmune response, etc.).

The first step toward change is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are. I applaud you for taking that step! I would be honored to create a collaborative space to explore the barriers that may be keeping you from where and who you want to be.

I want you to know that I’m glad you’re here and that therapy is a great starting point.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
