I specialize in serving and empowering pregnant and postpartum persons who are experiencing changes in their mental health, those who have experienced trauma, loss, and/ or have struggled with fertility challenges.
Just as the moon passes through different phases, so do we. Some phases are darker and some brighter than others, as is life. A new moon represents new beginnings, growth, rebirth, and renewed energy. I opened Luna Nueva Mental Health, LLC, so I could accompany clients on their journeys toward healing, understanding, and coping with each new phase, change, and season in life. I offer psychotherapy as well as somatic therapy utilizing training in Internal Family Systems and Brainspotting.

Therapy can be a deeply transformative experience where you may discover more of who you are and ultimately find a greater sense of peace. As a relational psychodynamic therapist, my first goal is to create an environment where you feel understood and supported in exploring your story. I have experience working with adolescents, adults, families, and perinatal patients. I also am an especially good fit for those who struggle with feelings of guilt and shame; those who consider themselves highly sensitive; and those who feel like outsiders.

I work with the healers and helpers who not only have seen the worst in their work, but also have a personal history of trauma. So many in the healing and helping professions have painful backgrounds that have fueled their fire to care for others. Healers experience some of the worst and most rampant burnout which can stem from a number of places including vicarious trauma and having past traumas triggered by clients, systems, and the overall work. Move from an inner place of fear, imposter syndrome and co-dependency to a place of inner security.

Pain can lead to the most profound feelings of isolation and hopelessness. I have experience working with individuals, families, and couples, helping people during the most vulnerable times in their lives and have seen first hand how unresolved and damaged relationships have negatively impacted people and caused pain. One of people's biggest regrets at end-of-life are the relationships they have neglected. One of my greatest passions is working with individuals and families to address hurts and impasses: being both witness and participant.

While relationships are my passion, I also strive to recognize each human within the relationship; as such, many areas I work in apply to both couples and individuals. My specialties are emotional & sexual intimacy, rebuilding trust, cultural blending, self-esteem, and communication. Growth occurs most successfully when there is a willingness to self-reflect, be curious, be open to challenge & change, and consistently work between sessions. My goal is for my clients to build the necessary skills to approach difficulties on their own - rather than rely on therapy indefinitely.

Thank you for prioritizing your mental health and dedicating time to it. Welcome to my practice, Open Horizons, where I provide clinical and forensic psychological services. I believe mental health is as crucial as physical health. When our bodies feel unwell, it impacts our mood and thoughts. Alternatively, stress can manifest physically when we have a lot on our minds. You’re probably here for a reason. Perhaps you worry too much about different things? Maybe you’re feeling down, depressed, or hopeless? Are you seeking guidance in navigating your relationships? Or you might simply want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

**NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS** "I just need a break!" Are you stuck in a pattern and can't find your way out? It can seem like you can't stop doing things that will hurt you in the long run. You find yourself saying, "This is just how I am." The story you believe about yourself- about what you deserve - is what will manifest. That narrative will run your life until you dismantle it, & rewrite it. If you aren't running it, it is running you. " The story always wins™ ". My approach is to help you figure out where you learned these things, & discard those that cause you pain & are no longer productive.

Accepting new VIRTUAL clients for Wednesday mornings. When life becomes overwhelming it can help to talk to someone you trust. As a counselor my goal is to help you better understand your struggles and how to manage them. Children and teenagers often struggle to explain their feelings to adults, and even their peers, making it difficult to get the support they need. Adults sometimes feel that they need to have it all together and take care of everyone else. This often means not taking care of yourself. I will work with you to tackle the struggles you are facing to find peace and happiness.

Our early years have a big impact on how we operate as adults. Our ways of being and personal struggles can often be traced back to our family of origin. How you were parented, the role you played in your family, the defenses you learned to get by or survive – these stay with you and inform how you operate in the world and in your relationships. Whatever your own history may have been, there's a place for what you learned and how you adapted; after all, it’s gotten you this far. But some of those early lessons have outlasted their usefulness and no longer serve you, leading to anxiety, depression, or chronic disconnection.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
