I specialize in working with children and their families who have difficulty overcoming behavioral issues, ADHD, parenting concerns, divorce, social skills, school challenges, anxiety, anger, depression, adjustment issues, and grief.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, life's challenges can leave your child, your family, or yourself feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, and/or uncertain. We all experience times when extra support is needed. Finding the right counselor is an important step on the journey to emotional wellness and personal growth. I believe my role is to help your family find strength and solutions by creating a safe, accepting environment where we work together to explore problems, identify skills, and gain new insight. Together, we work to restore balance in your family's lives and gain personal acceptance.

Specialty areas include treating emotional and behavioral dysregulation, social interaction difficulties, and executive function deficits associated with relational health, academic/occupational goal-attainment, and overall psychological well-being and growth.
We all experience a variety of emotional, behavioral, and social challenges. Mild difficulties are often a natural part of growth, and through the process of overcoming adversity, a person learns new skills, develops insight and wisdom, and builds resilience.  However, there are times and situations when moderate to severe problems arise, that will require professional assistance to address psychological needs. Over the past 20 years of providing services in schools, treatment facilities, and private practice, I have found that comprehensive psychological services do lead to positive outcomes for children, adolescents, and adults.

Knowledge and proficiency in blending approaches to include family systems, neuron-linguistic programming, psychodrama, psychodynamic approaches, Adlerian, and dialectic behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies.
I have a zeal for learning ways to inspire and help others. I came to Texas by way of the inner city of Northern New Jersey, and by the way of civil war ravaged Liberia in West Africa. I have learned that relationships continually call us to develop greater consciousness through shedding old beliefs and ways in order to grow. Relationships compel us to bring forth the light of awareness within all of us to engender the courage to be more of the deeper sense of who we are. My approach to counseling germinates from this disposition.

I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Play Therapy techniques.
Beginning the journey of therapy or picking up where you left off is a courageous step towards understanding and bettering oneself. Counseling is a collaborative process where we will work together to achieve goals and create the best versions of ourselves. I enjoy working with people of all ages but especially children. It is my passion to not only advocate for counseling but to ensure that the best resources are given and altered specifically to them. I understand that every person has their own story, background, and life path. I like to use people’s differences and embrace who they are with positive therapeutic methods.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
