With a background in education and clinical psychology specializing in marriage and family therapy, I have had extensive experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community, people who suffer from trauma, grief, abuse, anxiety, depression, and general self-esteem issues.
Ever felt like parenting or growing up should come with a manual? Well, guess what? You've just found your guide! My name is Samantha and I am a former middle and high school teacher. I have experienced firsthand the need for mental health care and general awareness in our educational system. But first and foremost, I care about YOU and creating a space where young minds can grow, laugh, and tackle life's twists and turns together.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist for more than thirty years and work with couples, families, and individuals 18 years old and up. My areas of specialty are addiction, alcohol use, anxiety, anger management, behavioral issues, and many more. I use various modalities: Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Existential, Exposure Response Prevention, Schema Therapy, Interpersonal, Marital, and Family Therapy. At times this can appear to be difficult, but it is much more difficult to avoid our problems.

People seek out therapy for many reasons. As a parent, you may feel confused and unsure of how to help your child. Are they struggling with mood, worries, or even their school performance? Maybe they have gone through a hurtful or traumatic experience. Or you might be navigating your own challenges. You find yourself feeling overwhelmed, irritated, and depleted from overthinking. Perhaps you’ve experienced a painful event and you’re questioning if you’ll heal and feel like yourself again.

Although anxiety can be helpful for us in our daily life, too much anxiety can make it more challenging for us to live the life we want. Other life difficulties can also feel like obstacles that need to be overcome. We can feel overwhelmed and powerless in those moments. Know that in these hard times, you are absolutely brave. You are also not alone. If you are interested in wanting more support with these challenges in a safe and open-minded environment, you have come to the right place!

You've taken the courageous first step of looking for support. You never thought you'd end up here... feeling overwhelmed, emotional, and exhausted. You're not sure who you are anymore, and you don't feel like you can push through, ignore, or compartmentalize these feelings any longer. Maybe it started recently after a birth, a fertility struggle, a loss, relationship change, trauma, or life transition. Maybe it started much earlier in life. Either way, this territory feels difficult for you, and you're ready to give yourself what you find so much easier to give to others... HELP.

Anxiety and OCD can feel completely overwhelming physically, mentally, and emotionally, and can make everyday life very challenging. Maybe you're avoiding things you used to enjoy, feeling like you're not yourself, withdrawing from others, or feeling discouraged, unmotivated, or depressed. You may be experiencing panic attacks, or worrying much more than you'd like. Perhaps your relationships are being impacted by anxiety; you may be feeling burnt out or having difficulty connecting with others. The good news is that it is possible to live life with greater peace, and I'd love to help!

Are you experiencing a difficult time in your life right now? Are you frequently anxious or tearful? Do you need help with relationships and assertiveness? I have over 10 years experience helping people navigate challenging times in their lives. I have specialized training in helping people with body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as hair pulling (trichotillomania) and skin picking (excoriation) and in helping people with OCD. Though I'm not in network with BCBS, I have had success in securing agreements with them for clients with BFRBs.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
