Having problems with communication in your relationship? Are there topics you can't discuss? Does it leave you feeling upset & withdrawn? These are natural feelings. Relationships can be hard- they take work. You may be thinking "We can't go on like this. I just don't know what to do." But there is hope-you can feel better. I am a Certified Imago Therapist for the past 20 years & do Imago Couples Workshops with my wife Amy. Helping couples, families, & individuals connect & communicate more effectively, especially around conflict is my passion. I have lived & worked through many of the same issues in my 37 years of marriage.

As a Clinical Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist, I have practiced for thirty years. I am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in The Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, where I teach and supervise Psychiatry residents. But most of my work is in my private practice, doing individual and couples psychodynamic psychotherapy. I'm a certified group psychotherapist and a certified Imago Relationship Therapist, Advanced Clinician. Although I'm not on any insurance plans and do fee for service, you can file insurance if you have provisions in your policy for out of network providers.

My clients often have communication issues. I work with couples and individuals looking for better ways to communicate with loved ones, peers, or in the work place. I am a Certified IMAGO Relationship Therapist. IMAGO is a theory that addresess how we listen, when we are triggered, get defensive, and stop listening. These skills are also helpful for adolescents and parents. I have worked in the Montrose area for 30 years. I welcome LGBT clients. I describe myself as a welcoming and interactive facilitator and therapist.

I am completing my certification in Imago Relationship Therapy (7/2023).
A therapist is like a dentist. We can avoid them for a while, and sometimes we find one we like or don't like. Eventually, though, everyone needs to see one. Therapy won't solve your problems, but it will help equip you with the tools you need to get through. We offer in-person and video sessions, and see children to adults. We have several groups available, and we accept insurance and offer a sliding scale. We believe therapy is for everyone. Contact us for a free consultation. Even if you don't end up seeing a therapist with our practice, we can help you find someone that you connect with.

I have been practicing for 30 years and am certified in Imago Relationship Therapy and EMDR.
Contrary to popular opinion that can characterize therapy as designed for unhealthy or dysfunctional people, my experience and belief is that therapy is for people seeking to improve their lives and their relationships. Whether it is a relationship with ourselves, with a spouse, partner, family or friends, many of us long for better connections and more empowerment in our lives. The good news is that we can learns skills to live more satisfying lives. Research on brain plasticity validates that we can change. Research also suggests we tend to do what we have already done, whether it works or not! Therapy can change this!

As a therapist for many years, I have found two approaches to couples therapy to stand out: Imago Relationship Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Imago, described in the NY Times best-selling, Getting the Love You Want, (Dr. Harville Hendrix), teaches a simple yet powerful communication tool that is ideal for anyone wishing to learn effective communication. EFT is superb for helping couples move past their own and their partner's frustrations into their deeper longings for connection. Combined, these two methodologies have proven to be the most powerful approach I know for couples in any stage of relationship.

Often clients think, "We love each other, we just fight too much." "I need help learning how to communicate my emotions." "I want this relationship to work, I just don't know how to get over the affair. I want to trust again." Is this you? Are these words you've said? Are you living in fear and pain, and desperate to find your way back to your partner and to a relationship that feels healthy and fulfilling?

My specialty is intimacy disorders including sex/love addiction & avoidance. Bad relationships can ruin your life & your happiness; however, relationships can be turned around. When addiction is present, the chances of real intimacy are small. Love addiction is a powerful & debilitating disorder that is very serious & potentially life threatening. Developmental trauma (also known as family of origin trauma or codependence) is a set up for self esteem & intimacy issues. If left untreated developmental trauma can lead to depression, anxiety, addiction & physical illness (Pia Mellody's). You're not alone!

A strong therapeutic alliance is a key to a successful treatment. Being able to reach someone's emotional feelings will open the doors for personal growth and positive developments. I am of the opinion that everyone has the capacity to change and improve their lives if the right therapeutic tools and coping skills are applied. My over 25 years in the field of mental health thought me this. I utilize the eclectic approach which allows me to incorporate different treatment modalities to achieve our 'agreed' goals. I will get you back to acceptable level of psychological functioning and you will be in control of your life again.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), Certified Clinical Partner Specialist (CCPS), EMDR +. When people have experienced abandonment and rejection from early in life to adulthood, it can create heartbreak and betrayal like no other. If you tend to get into destructive relationships where you end up hurt or end up hurting others, the grief, despair, and shame can be debilitating and overwhelming. It will be hard to show up in your relationships and be present. There will be struggles with relationships, with work, with children, and financial issues.

We live in uncertain times. However, many times we experience anxiety, depression, etc. because we spend too much time focusing on what we didn't get in the past or worried about a future that is not here yet...in other words, we focus on everywhere but HERE and NOW. And it's not about WHAT happened to us, but HOW WE DEFINE what happened to us.

Imago Therapists

How does Imago therapy work?

Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?

A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?

There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
