Most of my experience is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, and substance use/process addiction treatment.
Welcome to my page! In recent years, many of us have felt tectonic changes in our world due to advances in technology (social media, AI, automation) and our economy (job loss, outsourcing, inflation), all of which has led to increase levels of mental distress: depression, anxiety, addiction, family issues, loneliness. Chances are you are here for some of these reasons. If so, know that there are healthy, effective ways to cope and gain a deeper level of peace in your life.

Life inevitably brings us painful feelings, thoughts, and experiences that we often respond to by trying to suppress, run away from, avoid, or numb ourselves. This may result in struggles such as addiction, anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, etc., and may cause us to lash out at our loved ones or act in ways we do not feel good about. My clinical approach is inspired by the concept that we cannot always “get rid of” painful parts of our lives or the things outside our control, but what we can do is work to develop a different relationship with them so that they come to have less influence or power over us day to day.

I specialize in using evidence-based practices from CBT, DBT, and mindfulness based theories to help explore difficult emotions, harmful thought patterns, and to better manage stress and anxiety.
Are you the strong friend who silently bears the weight of the world while yearning for a moment of peace amid the chaos of work and life? Carrying the weight of the world in silence is a heavy burden and even the strong need a sanctuary. Sometimes we need help learning strategies to manage it all.

I take a very eclectic approach to my practice and like to adapt to each person. Everybody is an individual, and cookie cutter approaches just don’t always fit the bill! I like to channel each person’s strengths to help guide them through troubling times. I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I also utilize CBT, solution-focused, trauma informed care. Coming into therapy can be hard, and I want to make sure you are getting what you need in order to heal, process, and grow!

Though I address unresolved issues, I also utilize Cognitive Behavioral and Solution-Focused techniques to motivate clients toward action.
I am an African American male whose life experience provides significant insight and resourcefulness for those struggling with relational issues, regardless of race or ethnic background. I have found, along with the richness of diversity, there is far more commonality amongst our species. It is on this ground we meet and explore this experience of life and the solutions to it's dilemmas...your dilemmas.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
