Trauma has a way of taking over every aspect of your life, from your day-to-day interactions with others to the quiet moments alone. Maybe it creeps up in your love life and tells you, that you are broken and unworthy of healthy love. Perhaps it has gotten in the way of your parenting or work and feels like a ton of bricks in a backpack that you can’t seem to put down. Either way, trauma wounds, like grief, anxiety, and depression get in the way of living your life at its fullest potential. They cloud your values and impact your access to peace, pleasure, and pain-free life. What would it look like to unpack this backpack?

I approach therapy as a partnership. I believe that people are able to identify and discover their unique strengths, gifts, and wounds through a supportive therapeutic relationship. I really believe in the deep goodness of each person and understand that part of recovering from difficulties and trauma involves re-discovering this goodness and understanding what interrupted growth. Together, I collaborate with people to develop resources and practices that provide an additional layer of support while doing the vulnerable and challenging work of therapy.

When you think about sleep how do you feel? Anxious? Frustrated? Defeated? Exhausted? You are not alone. Insomnia, or consistently having difficulty falling or staying asleep and experiencing nonrestorative sleep, daytime fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, affects many. And the paradox is this: the harder you try, the more elusive a good night's sleep becomes.

Life can be challenging. Being human can be challenging. Everyday tasks can be challenging. We often forget to give ourselves the same grace we offer others. We sometimes allow the hustle and bustle of life to swallow us. We can learn to move through those challenging times together. I hope to create a space where you feel safe to not only embrace the challenges, but thrive through them, while learning to live in your full authentic self.

You feel overwhelmed all of the time, there’s not enough time in the day to do everything that is expected of you, and even your kids feel like a burden. You don’t feel close to your partner, and you’re not feeling motivated at work… feeling like a failure is a common experience these days and with all the guilt that comes along with it. You wish you could wake up with energy instead of the dread of doing it all over again, just like the day before. You want to have the energy to have patience for your kids and their needs, feel your best at work, and look forward to coming home afterward instead of stressed and resentful.

As a Clinical Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist, I have practiced for thirty years. I am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in The Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, where I teach and supervise Psychiatry residents. But most of my work is in my private practice, doing individual and couples psychodynamic psychotherapy. I'm a certified group psychotherapist and a certified Imago Relationship Therapist, Advanced Clinician. Although I'm not on any insurance plans and do fee for service, you can file insurance if you have provisions in your policy for out of network providers.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
