I have always had confidence in the potential of people and their own capacity to change. I work with people and families to develop their own power and strength to make the positives transformations that they choose. There are times people need someone to offer a little guidance or perspective. My focus is on helping individuals and families heal themselves at their pace and choosing their own goals and direction. Life offers up a lot of challenges and overcoming or recovering from those challenges creates a stronger individual and family.

Are you feeling anxious? Having trouble sleeping? Are you having problems socializing with other humans? You can and deserve to feel better. You are probably more "normal" than you think you are.

I want to get to know you, wherever you'd like to start. Together, we can explore ways to increase your ability to manage and cope and find more happiness and calmness. I've got 30 years of experience helping people navigate through the impact of traumatic situations and serious grief and loss, including sexual assault, domestic violence, abusive childhoods, chronic illness, and tragic death. I understand the crushing weight of hopelessness and thoughts that things will never be better or even different. I know that things can and do change and I strongly believe that we are not simply what happened to us.

Do you ever wake up in the morning and say to yourself, “I don’t think I can make it another day like this”? Maybe you feel like your anxiety is taking over your life and there’s no escape. Maybe you live with shame so crippling that it invades every aspect of your life. Or maybe you find yourself constantly running from your own emotions, memories, and thoughts, only to feel mentally and emotionally exhausted. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people feel the exact same way you do, and all they want is to feel normal.

Hi there! My name is Hunaina (rhymes with Banana) and I work with individuals, couples and families struggling with relationship disconnection and/or conflict. My training is in relational science whether that be a romantic relationship or familial relationship. It’s true that growth and healing is not a straight or easy path. It can get uncomfortable and messy, but that is the cost of relational happiness. Anything worth having will cost you something. It has been said that the quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life, so why wouldn’t you work on the most significant contributor to a life well lived?

Adulthood can generally mean transitions, complex relationships, self-doubt, and uncertainty. Unfortunately, nobody told us how to navigate all of this and it can feel really challenging to balance all of the responsibilities. If things in your life feel really overwhelming or you notice that your life feels stagnant and you want to keep growing, you don’t have to go through it alone. I meet you where you’re at and we work to add tools to your toolbox in a safe and non-judgmental space. I want to work with you to help you discover a peaceful relationship with yourself.

When we reach the limits of our emotional pain tolerance, we may see that the way we’ve been coping with our stress and pain is not sustainable. This can look like disordered eating, self-harm, self-medicating, perfectionism, self-sabotage, or isolation. This realization is particularly hard when our ways of coping feel like a lifeline and the idea of change feels at best theoretical and at worst like an invitation for impending doom. Our inner beliefs of being unworthy, unlovable, unsafe, out of control, and powerless ensure that we keep choosing the same self-destructive coping strategies over and over.

I also work with the mind-body connection for women struggling with gynecological challenges, like infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, and menopause.
At times, we all feel wounded or slighted by life. For some, feeling better may mean learning how to live with or without someone or something…whether that be a person, a pet, a dream or expectation. For others, it might mean learning how best to honor or understand the past, discover the freedom of living life in the present, or navigating a more purposeful path forward. It is the path we choose that can either mend those wounds to help us heal or harbor wounds that don't grow us. Through the path of counseling, we can learn to lead a more purposeful and healthier lifestyle.

My passion is working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. My goal is to foster a safe environment for all my clients to explore feelings and emotions that have been creating distress. With younger children, I understand that it may be harder to communicate their feelings with words and play therapy can be used to more effectively explore their thoughts. My hope is to create a therapeutic relationship to guide the client toward positive coping skills and start leading more enriching lives. I believe that each client has the ability and the capacity within themselves to become empowered and thrive.

While considering a multicultural perspective, I have been trained to help my clients reach their unique individual goals, guiding them along their life journey with an existential psychological perspective While it is inevitable that we suffer, we all have the freedom to choose how we face our struggles & the nature of our existence in the world.

Life is complex and unexpected which can be overwhelming, especially if you are someone who wants to have it all "figured out." I work primarily with young adult females who struggle with anxiety, people pleasing behaviors, trauma, family/relationship issues, etc. You may be someone who presents to the world as being “put together,” but on the inside you feel the complete opposite. Therapy can help make a difference in these areas by uncovering the 'why' behind certain thoughts and behaviors. This increase in self-awareness and understanding can help to make the change that you have been wanting.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
