Waitlist for new clients
THERApY SUCkS! Not really. . . but it can be uncomfortable. I can help. I currently have a waitlist for new clients for standard therapy sessions, however I am taking new client "intensives". An intensive session is an efficient and novel approach to trauma therapy where we spend anywhere from 2 to 4 hours in focused sessions. Additionally, I offer 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day intensive sessions working with EMDR and/or ART. I am trained in EMDR (through an EMDRIA approved training) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a relatively new, evidence-based therapy for PTSD and trauma. Reach out for a free consult to learn more.

One of the beliefs of some counselors is that people have all the resources they need to make the changes or fix the problems in their life. Counselors are just tools that you use to acheive what you want. So true, but when you're looking for a counselor to assist you, the problem may seem too big to handle. Let me help. I have a great ability to focus and elevate your own skills and reveal your solutions.

My more than 35 years in clinical practice gives me skills that only come with experience. As a therapist who has done my own fair share of healing work, I see adults of all ages regarding a variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, life transitions, life stressors & identity exploration. I like to work with people to help them create the kind of life they want to live. With my more than three decades of experience, I've worked with a wide variety of additional types of issues. So it's almost as if I've heard just about every type of issue that might exist.

Joseph Campbell once said, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." As a therapist, I believe there can be no greater goal than to help you become your authentic self. By acknowledging you as the expert in your own life, and not imposing my own ideas of who you "should" be, my role is to help you work through any old survival strategies, reactive patterns, and physical/emotional traumas that prevent you from being the person you were meant to be, and living the life you were meant to live.

Therapy is a journey and not always the easiest to embark upon and just showing up is half the battle. As a therapist it’s my job to gently guide you through this process. Developing a therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of the work of therapy. In the first few appointments I will get to know you and the various problems that have kept you from reaching your goals. From there we will work together on reaching positive goals. I enjoy coffee, college sports, my dogs, travel, and collecting mechanical watches.

There is nothing more isolating than feeling like you’re alone in your experiences—constantly Googling what “normal” would feel like. Your life feels everything but normal, and in an attempt to make your life seem like everything’s fine, you don’t talk about your anxiety. You don’t talk about the crippling stress you feel at work. You don’t talk about how you haven’t eaten today. You desperately want to feel normal, and you want everyone to think everything is okay. But you are far from okay. You constantly wonder if other people feel the way you do.

Are you finding that life is difficult to cope with due to lack of control of your emotions? I have a special interest in working with people who experience anxiety, depression, and trauma. I will create a place where you can be your genuine self while feeling unjudged. Maybe you are unsure what your genuine self is, if so then our space can be the perfect start to discovering it. I know that being vulnerable can be difficult however through therapy, you do not need to face it alone. While beginning this journey of understanding, I will guide you in the exploration of yourself as well as help you find acceptance and compassion.

I'm the guy in your corner. Need to vent, let it out, want to brainstorm solutions, let's make it rain! I'm here for you and with that comes accountability, humor, and a lot of affirmation. I primarily counsel through REBT or Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. I push for people to set realistic expectations for themselves and the people they allow in their lives. I've worked with adults and kids through trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship and marriage issues, job changes, and life transitions. If you have something you want to work on, take a chance and let's see what kind of work we can do together!

If you are anything like me when I was in my lowest place, I sought therapy. Nobody helped me identify the root, they only focused on the surface issues. It seemed to add more suffering on top of an already distraught situation. Suffering sucks! Life was made for living. I was tired of losing out because of what others had done to me or because I couldn’t get the solutions to my issues! If you are committed to your healing and recovery, I will take you through every step of the process to go from victim to victor! It is so exciting to be able to assist those who are tired of suffering and losing years and decades of their lives.

Counseling is an intimate process, and can bring to light aspects of our lives that we have intentionally shielded from public view. Here, in closed corners, many of us struggle with loneliness, broken relationships, paralyzing fears, unmet expectations, and questions about our purpose. This is also where our most profound healing occurs. It’s scary. It’s nerve wrecking. But taking that first step is always worth it.

Unfortunately, problems come more easily and swiftly than progress and solutions. Weeks and months of positive steps forward can seem to be undone in a fraction of the time. I hope to unravel your life's complexities together to find and build a resilient path forward. Depression, anxiety, addiction and trauma can seem insurmountable, but they aren't. I'd love to explore the story of who you are and help blend it into the story of who you want to be.

Reaching out for help can be terrifying especially when we're hurting. Throughout the past decade I've worked with University of Houston's Graduate College of Social Work, Menninger Clinic, The Council on Recovery and Montrose Center. I have specific interest in working with men and couples who are looking to deepen intimacy within themselves and in their relationships. As an educator and clinical supervisor, I offer guidance to students as they establish and fine-tune their love for this work. I commit myself to co-creating a therapeutic environment where safety and growth are of top priority. We are in this together.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
