I work with people who are doing the best they can but don't see things quite working out, who are feeling like they don't belong, who are struggling to feel whole, who are caught up in unhelpful behaviors & patterns, who are lost and confused, who are trapped in their fears or thoughts, and who have had difficult upbringings. Any one of these can leave you feeling stuck or absent in your life. I've worked with clients from many backgrounds to overcome their fears, anxiety, anger, and depression and begin to feel present and unstuck once again. Now I'd like to help you, too....

My ideal client is someone that can envision a better life and existence, and is willing to actively and persistently collaborate to work towards actualizing the goals they believe will enhance their mindset, their daily experience, and ultimately their quality of life. A willingness to discuss how they perceive and experience their issues will lead to a deeper understanding of root causes, actual needs, and the Self, which in turn will shift perspectives and transform personal narratives. Problems and needs become challenges met with action (via daily practice) that establish new behavioral patterns designed to achieve their goals.

Accepting new clients. Political stress and need to talk about the future? Burned out at work? Feel like you're failing at your relationships? Do you smoke too much, drink too much, isolate, or do you have trouble talking about feelings? I am a direct therapist that works well with people who have troubles opening up. Send me an email so that we can start to fix things in your life. I identify as a gay male Hispanic liberal and military veteran who is a huge fan of dark humor.

My practice is all about improving self-awareness, self-control, and resiliency. I also focus on strengthening overall family connections and support. I use an eclectic blend of evidence-based theories and experiential practice. That means using the best of science in ways that are real, relevant, and in the moment. Within each client/patient/person is a great teacher to themselves.

I have counseled individuals, families, and couples for forty-four years. I assist clients with issues that include depression, anxiety, family communication, career choices, and the stress of physical illness. Trained in psychodynamic, client-centered, and Jungian methods, I tailor counseling to the needs of clients. I favor approaches that respect innate creativity, core values, and interdependence. In addition to talking, other modalities may include relaxation and imagery, sometimes called self-hypnosis, journaling, and the use of art. As a former priest I bring to my practice the conviction that problems are ultimately resolved by finding meaning and purpose.

Special Note: Since the pandemic began, it has developed that communicating with me via email is a faster method for reaching me than by telephone. Different people have different questions about psychology and psychotherapy. Email me with any questions you may have about me or my work and and I will reply as promptly as possible.

I believe that every person’s life could be a novel. Everyone is born with a set of unique experiences, gifting and personality. Therapy should utilize and capitalize on these unique qualities of each individual. Everyone experiences their own unique set of challenges and triumphs in life. However, sometimes circumstances are more than someone can deal with alone. Friends certainly do help, but certain things should be handled with a caring professional who will work to understand each person’s situation. A good therapist will help to uncover, provide feedback, and talk with each individual about solutions to life’s challenges.

Our healing journey is exactly that - a journey. I know personally how difficult that journey can be, I've been there. At its core, my primary goal has always been to find personal peace, a goal that remains steadfast even today. Can you identify with this quest for inner harmony? Are you also on a journey to unlock the best version of yourself? Understanding that desire intimately, I have chosen a purposeful path that enables me to utilize my passion and talents to help others unearth and embrace their true selves. My aim is to guide them towards finding peace with the authentic version of who they are - their Real U.

My philosophy to counseling is simple: Help clients feel safe in sharing their story, leaving each session with hope and a renewed resilience. I blend Person-centered therapy with CBT to create a nurturing, empowering space for all. Driven by a calling to make a positive impact in this wild world, I focus on uplifting the broken-hearted and healing those who feel forgotten. Warm and approachable, I balance compassion with professionalism. Outside of work, I enjoy music, watching baseball, and playing with my dog, Nala.

In facing challenges we often come across during these trying times it can often leave us with feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. However, we have the greater choice to respond rather than react in the most profound and positive manner to what we may encounter along this arduous road to finding a better you. Throughout this purpose driven life of mine, I have had the greatest of opportunities to build with adolescents, adults, couples, families, and large groups.

As a male and BIPOC and 1st-generation college graduate from East Texas, I get how the path is not always carved out or easy.
Y'all means "All" in my best Texan drawl. The client, my type of therapy would best serve ranges from a first-timer to a client experienced in heavy lifting. Consider me your spotter and partner to help you with the heavy lifting. This client often needs a partner like me to help make sense of their stuff. The goals of this type of client come from all walks of life, to address life concerns and to set goals to achieve through collaborative care. These concerns often center on life, cultural and family issues, to name a few.

Do you feel overwhelmed, smothered or even confined? Is there a painful truth that your life appears to slow down when you want desperately for it to fast forward? Does it somehow seem to be on repeat but you and the issue (at hand) are the only constants? Has life dealt you so many blows that it seems as if bliss if unimaginable anymore? Are you searching for answering and are tired of quick fixes? The truth is life is a cycle of never ending repeats and if you do not recognize the patterns and make conscious changes where needed, the cycle can be vicious and detrimental.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
