I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist with depression, anxiety and relationship problems.
I specialize in working with couples and individuals with relationship problems. I also conduct forensic evaluations for cases involving intimate partner violence. As a relationship researcher for the past 25 years, I am applying research to help couples and individuals with communication, sexual, or other problems by offering couples' assessments, therapy, & forensic evaluations. Combining the work of my Ph.D. mentors, Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Neil Jacobson, my scientifically-based couples therapy combines Gottman Couples Therapy and Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy. My approach is direct, short-term and effective.

My work is informed by the following approaches: attachment theory, psychodynamic and supportive psychotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
I believe that the quality of our mind shapes the quality of our life. You can regain the freedom to choose how you feel and respond to challenges and difficulties while nurturing richer and happier relationships. My experience and training revolve around four major areas: anxiety, depression, trauma, and cancer. I know how to address your psychological distress with empathy and support, harnessing your strengths to master new coping skills. I view therapy as a collaborative effort and continually seek out feedback as to how treatment is progressing.

These include CBT, ACT, RET, and mindfulness.
I have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and have been in practice since 1986. My style is interactive, but varies depending on the needs and personality of the client(s). I see the therapy process as a team effort with ongoing review of client satisfaction. When appropriate I consult other professionals and/or make referrals. I believe that peoples' feelings and behaviors are effected by their interpretations of events, and sometimes encourage clients to explore their interpretations. I try to work within their spiritual and cultural belief system, and seek information when my knowledge is limited.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process where you are the expert in you and I am the expert in human behavior. Together we work toward achieving your goals. I work from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, however, I am trained in a variety of techniques, including EMDR, and I tailor my approach to meet my client's individual needs. Many adults seek treatment when they discover that their coping strategies and survival skills of childhood don't work in adulthood. Frequently, people are feeling overwhelmed when they enter treatment. Therefore, lowering one's baseline level of distress is usually the first step.

My graduate program and research experience are Cognitive Behavioral in theoretical orientation.
I work primarily with adults and adolescents who are having trouble negotiating difficult life stages. I treat both short-term, acute problems and more pervasive, long-standing problems. My years of training, first in CBT, and later in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches allow me to use both in my practice. The client and I decide on treatment approaches based on his or her strengths and preferences.

No two people are alike, so I draw from over 25 years of training and experience as a Clinical Psychologist to help my client's address the problems that brought them in to see me and have a better life. Typically, I rely upon cognitive, psychodynamic, interpersonal, family systems or behavioral approaches, but I utilize whatever works to help my clients get the core of their problems and resolve them. I work with adults, couples, young adults and adolescents, and I accept many insurance plans and private pay. When you're ready to change and have your life work call me.

I can help you get the easy, effortless sleep you want again! In as few as 6-8 session, the treatment I use (CBT-I, Google it!) has the power to transform your sleep so that you can fall asleep easily.
If you've dreaded going to bed because you know it will be yet another night of tossing and turning, you know how desperate you can be to get some shuteye. It's possible you're even reading this at 3am. You may have tried everything--medications, natural supplements, meditation, oils, etc.--and nothing seems to work! It can be frustrating when you used to sleep so easily. You begin to feel like your insomnia has a life of its own, feeling drowsy on your commute to work, drinking cup after cup of coffee to make it through your day. You look on jealously at your partner or kid, who seem to sleep so effortlessly. It feels unfair!

From there, we'll use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to heal past hurts and build coping skills for your lasting change.
Trauma shatters our world, and no one should deal with trauma alone. Together we can find your peace, laughter, and connection again—for you, your teen, your family. Trauma is my specialty—let's talk. In my experience, trauma can feel like someone is holding you or your teen hostage. Constant fear, flashbacks, and disconnection can be unbearable. But I know that you and your family have the strength to heal. Together, we can create a safe space to process your experience and rebuild a life filled with hope and resilience.

Primarily, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based techniques.
Are you feeling held back by sadness, worry, or lack of fulfillment in life? These are normal obstacles that we all face in life; therapy can help you tackle them. It can be hard to reach out for help and connect with a therapist who can help you make the changes you hope to see. I have expertise in helping people who suffer from a variety of problems, including depression, anxiety, and recovery from trauma. I also help couples repair conflict and rebuild a foundation of friendship and love.

I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and EMDR therapy and use modalities that focus on mindfulness, acceptance, and motivation.
I believe healing happens in relationships and pride myself in being a warm, cheerful, direct, open-minded therapist who empowers clients to reach their goals and improve their quality of life. I recognize that the first session with a new therapist can be intimidating, so I work to make clients feel comfortable and safe to share their struggles. Change does not always progress linearly and may feel unattainable at times, but I believe in meeting people where they are. Having a supportive and knowledgeable therapist can facilitate your growth and help you feel confident in handling the changes life throws your way.

My clients often share that they feel heard, seen, and celebrated as individuals throughout therapy. I apply research-backed, trauma-informed, multi-culturally competent individual therapy to instill hope, self-compassion, and empowerment in young people. Through gentle guidance, developmentally appropriate psychoeducation, and empathic listening, my clients are able to tap into their inner strengths and vulnerabilities, and learn to tolerate discomforts and-- once and for all-- conquer their fears and insecurities.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
