You want to experience more joy and fulfillment in your life, but you struggle with fear of failure or rejection, difficulty focusing on positive thoughts in challenging moments, lack of motivation due to low energy levels, a sense of isolation or loneliness, difficulty seeing self-worth or finding purpose, feeling overwhelmed by the state of your emotions and mental health. If you have anxiety, grief, or chronic pain, life can be hard. I’m here to help you make it easier. Even though it may feel like happiness is unattainable right now. You are a loving caregiver, dedicated to your child. But lately, you have found yourself amid an emotional tempest, questioning your abilities and feeling like a parenting failure. Your child’s behavior has become increasingly challenging. Tantrums erupt at the most unexpected times, drawing judgmental glances from strangers and leaving you feeling embarrassed and ashamed. You often wonder how such a tiny human could evoke such intense guilt and self-doubt within you.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist for more than thirty years and work with couples, families, and individuals 18 years old and up. My areas of specialty are addiction, alcohol use, anxiety, anger management, behavioral issues, and many more. I use various modalities: Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Existential, Exposure Response Prevention, Schema Therapy, Interpersonal, Marital, and Family Therapy. At times this can appear to be difficult, but it is much more difficult to avoid our problems.

I enjoy working with individuals struggling to navigate culture and immigration, addictions, work conflict and career exploration, trauma experiences, relationship conflicts, and parenting.
Life can be difficult and is filled with challenges and traumatic experiences that require our attention and care in order to heal. We are skilled at silencing the aching inside via escape hatches: excessive shopping, over/under eating, using drugs or alcohol, sex, gambling, gaming, etc. Yet, a therapeutic relationship can offer support as we move into freedom by learning to live in the present moment with all life has to offer...

I'm about love, self-compassion, radical acceptance, embracing failure, trusting your innate wisdom and starting over. I fundamentally believe in every person's ability to recover from trauma, addiction and life, in general. Experience has taught me that no one is really avoiding anything. When people accuse you of not dealing with something, what they are really saying is you aren't dealing with it the way they want you to. From my perspective, if you wake up every morning and breathe in and out all day long, you're dealing with your stuff. A tiny bit of intention is all it takes to begin healing.

My specialty is in complex dissociation and trauma.
Following a traumatic experience, most of us are encouraged - through the world or those we trust - to toughen up and move on. However, despite our best efforts, the effects of this experience leak out at the most inopportune times. For some, this might look like sabotaging yourself or your relationships, using a substance in order to remain numb, or becoming so plagued with reminders of this experience you feel that you cannot think of anything else. In addition, you might have a set of feelings or symptoms that seem to be connected but you have difficulty naming. When you try to discuss these with loved ones, you are dismissed.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
