I am able to integrate faith and spirituality into the treatment process, though it is not a requirement.
Whether I am working with a five-year-old adjusting to a new environment, a teenager dealing with depression, or an established adult suffering from grief, my goal is to create an atmosphere of vulnerability, honesty, and trust so that my clients can feel safe to express whatever burden they carry. I approach every session with curiosity, gentleness, and a genuine desire for clients to feel known, respected, and valued.

I help people who have experienced a loss. Maybe at first your friends and family were all there for you but now it feels like they have moved on and you haven’t. You don’t want to burden your loved ones with these heavy feelings but you just can’t seem to get past feeling like the loss just happened. You may also be still having flashbacks or nightmares about what happened. These feelings are overwhelming and you feel like if you stop feeling them it would be a betrayal to the person you lost. These emotions and thoughts are common and I can help. Not “get over it” or “move on” but to move through this difficult time.

Since the days of pigtails, I’ve been pulled by this strong force to access wisdom and connect with something higher than this tangible world. This gnawing passion has led me to study the power of the mind and how to create what our souls truly desire. I’ve been blessed to study ancient technologies such as yoga and breathwork and am so passionate about sharing simple tools to effect real change. I was trained in counseling at University of North Texas, receiving my Masters in Education. My favorite courses were transpersonal counseling and stress reduction through movement.

Along our journey in life every choice we make has a ripple effect to it, and the decision to seek out counseling is no different. Counseling is not a magic wand to solve problems, it takes work and my job as a therapist is to guide you through that process. To do that, I incorporate techniques from multiple counseling theories and methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Person Centered Therapy, and Trauma Informed Counseling.

I have experience working with a variety of presenting problems. While it is hard to admit that it is ok to not be ok, it takes courage to accept help/support in making lasting changes. Many mental health struggles are the result of trying to be strong for too long. I hope to work with motivated clients that want to change and are ready to work hard, dive deep, and have a teachable spirit. I love working with clients who are honest, realistic, want to have a voice, and are ready to make their goals a reality. I will provide encouragement, support, empathy, empowerment, insights, and unconditional acceptance.

Adolescence and young adulthood is a time of great transition both mentally and physically. At NextGen Counseling, support is provided for teens and adults to help navigate the seemingly overwhelming emotions they are experiencing from the world around them. In a society where teens and adults are bombarded with contradictory messages on how they should act, think, and feel, therapy provides a "safe zone" for them to voice their concerns and be understood.

The quality of our close relationships is a primary factor of well being. When those break down, we get internal and external conflict: anxiety, isolation, resentments, and conflict. In therapy, we heal the roots of relational conflict so you can feel close and satisfied. The focus of my practice is healing relationships for couples and helping individuals resolve what may be blocking them from getting the relationships they long for (relationships with self and others). I work from a place that honors your values and can integrate Christian faith into our counseling if you desire.

We are born as relational beings looking for others to connect with and trust. When early relationships are unavailable or trust is broken this leads to dysfunctional ways of relating to others and getting needs met. I work with couples, families, and individuals, discovering and changing their unhealthy ways of coping with stress and communicating. I also work with Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Addiction, Codependency and Early Developmental Trauma. My desire is to walk through your journey with you providing a safe place to process and learn new healthier ways of managing your life struggles.

Life is challenging and at times can be overwhelming. The need to have two Income families, shuttling kids to school then to activities such as sporting events, dance practice and band practice is very daunting to say the least. My work is to help you ferret out that solution. Unhealed traumas and complex emotions needing to be untangled ware us down. Help is available. call or email me.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
