Do you struggle finding the motivation to get out of bed in the morning, let alone do the things you used to love? Are you constantly anxious interacting with people, or worry excessively about the future? Do you feel like you can't focus long enough to get anything done? Perhaps, you have a relentless sense of irritation when dealing with the world and you just want to experience inner peace for once.

There are times in life where people feel stuck. There are many reasons for these situations. For adolescents, it can be mainly attempting to establish identity or a voice and the resulting anxiety from trying to navigate their world. For older teens, some are left with the confusion and fear of how to transition to adulthood and the question of failing. For adults, of course, we are supposed to have it all figured out. The truth is people may not be living true to their values or believe the mistakes made are too great to overcome. Maybe there was an anxiety or trauma so great it governs the choices made; Even from caregivers.

Welcome! As you seek out psychotherapy for yourself or your child, I hope this page helps in determining if I may be a good fit as a provider. At the heart of therapy is relationship- a building of trust that allows for desired change to unfold. My passion is in assisting this unfolding by helping clients to identify behavior patterns and responses to their thoughts and emotions that are keeping them stuck, unhappy, or misaligned with their values. My goal is to bring evidenced-based care to people seeking a life worth living- a rich, full life with healthy relationships with others and with themselves.

Hi, my name is Michelle and I know what it is like to have some bad experiences in life and how hard it is to reach out for support. I spent a lot of time not even knowing where to start or how to even put struggles into words. Once I found how therapy can work, I found my calling. Have you or your child been experiencing anxiety, grief, or change in mood and behavior? Was there any past trauma to address? If you answered yes and are looking to create change and live a balanced emotional and behavioral life it can be achieved. You can live a healthy balanced life and feel the control that you are looking for. Your life has multiple ups and downs throughout your story. At times it can feel like you are not in control of things that you believe "should come easy". You have already taken the first two steps. First recognizing things are not the way you want them to be and secondly searching for answers and help.

Often families, friends & colleagues will find themselves questioning options & even feeling they have tried everything to help someone struggling with alcoholism/addiction & mental health issues. The long standing belief that a person must reach rock-bottom before they will accept help is a distracting & dangerous lie. There is a way to intervene & create a safer rock bottom & help create a healthier life for ourselves as well as our loved one struggling with the addiction. The clinical intervention process has proven overwhelmingly successful in bringing about life-changing experiences for everyone involved in the intervention.

Your past should NEVER dictate the quality of your future. Your pain and struggle are real and your life matters. I believe that, as long as there is breath, there is hope. But, change only comes when someone truly desires a better life. In other words, I can help you find a way to move forward from "today" with hope and understanding for tomorrow.

My areas of specialty include first responder/veteran PTSD, substance abuse, trauma, and mindfulness. I am EMDR trained and have extensive experience utilizing EMDR to resolve trauma associated with first responder experiences, accidents, grief/loss, military combat, childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, and more. My work, as well as my personal life, is grounded in mindfulness. When we train our attention to stay in the present moment, we become much more aware of the stories we tell ourselves and how much suffering we experience as a result.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
