In addition to private practice, I have also worked with multiple psychiatric hospitals as an inpatient therapist with a focus on depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-esteem, and PTSD.
My name is Shanna Dominguez and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. You may be experiencing worry, fear, anxiety, depression, or a variety of other emotions. Good news, those emotions can be managed, I believe there are two experts in the room: You are the expert of your life and I am the clinical expert. I have had the privilege of working with adults, couples, and adolescents. I use a variety of techniques and theories to guide my work with you depending on what fits your needs. I specialize in CBT and DBT methods. As humans, we not only want to feel understood, but we want to understand ourselves & why we do the things we do.

Loss, failure, and separation are major root causes of many forms of suffering in life. But they are not always evident, we may be too young when live through them, or we may not feel their impact until long after an event. Sometimes they even travel through generations. As a psychotherapist, I have spent over 25 years helping people who suffered from a variety of emotional and relational problems created by one or a combination of these issues, ranging from basic unhappiness to unhealthy relationships, workplace conflicts, divorce and separations, parents struggling with their children, migration and forced separation, even trauma.

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, which is a thoroughly researched method for addressing trauma that has gone unprocessed, and supports the brain’s natural healing process.
My work is centered around neurodiversity and trauma-affirming care, frequently assisting people change their codependent relationship habits and chronic people-pleasing. Common goals amongst the people I see are navigating complicated relationships with adult family members, while also working through past experiences that have gone unprocessed that may be hindering someone from living their most fulfilling life. Clients can expect to obtain practical skills for working through triggers and obstacles that show up in their daily life.

I work well with identity: helping people find their place in the world amid crisis, trauma, & life transitions.
“You must always be yourself, no matter what the price. It is the highest form of morality.” – Candy Darling - - - - Trans people are living in an extremely violent environment right now. It's a scary place to navigate, much less figure out who you are. I want to be a support, even if just as an advocate in helping you find care. - - - - Moving through life can be overwhelming: sometimes we just need someone to be in our moment with us and give us a perspective we can't see. If you feel like you're losing your direction, not sure who you are anymore, or just need some help accepting that person, counseling can be really helpful.

I believe therapy is a place to explore, gently recover from trauma, and develop a meaningful life.
Are you neuroqueer? You are, or think you might be, gifted, trans, ADHD, gay, autistic, poly, or a highly sensitive person. These identities begin on the inside, in how we relate to and experience the world. In turn, they shape how the world treats us. Because they start within us, they often go unnoticed, by ourselves or others, for at least a while. But we’ve always felt them, somehow. We know we are different; we feel we don’t belong or can’t fit in. It seems like everyone else got a copy of a script or rulebook that we didn’t. It’s a struggle to know who or how to be.

I work with adults individually and in relationships of all types to treat complex PTSD, anxiety, depression, self esteem and relational issues at their roots.
Our emotions, behaviors and relationships can be overwhelming to make sense of. Having the support of an unbiased perspective can help as we grow beyond the things that cause us discomfort. As a systems therapist, I understand the issues brought into the therapy in relation to the school, work, relational, societal and intergenerational systems involved. Yes, that does mean talking about your parents and how the messages you received in your family have shaped you. It also means talking about the ways culture, race, sexuality, work environments and history affect the ways we feel and behave.

I am trauma informed, anti-racist, and have specific expertise in queer and trans mental health.
Hi ya'll :) I provide services to people who seek my help. Even if it's to get you to another provider who fits you! I want to work with folks who are open to doing the work - which is a hard thing to do. I validate that. But let's do this if you have the space. I provide gender affirmative psychotherapy, as well as brief assessments for WPATH letters for life saving, gender affirmative health care + GHAC letters to appeal insurance denials of coverage for GAHC (don't back down!). You don't have to be LGBTQIA2S+ for me to be invested in your well-being. If you imagine a fit, please reach out and we can figure it out together.

Utilizing a psychodynamic, relational, trauma-informed, systems-centered approach, I focus on exploring the roots of our struggles, strengths, and whole selves, and the possibility of creatively engaging with the world around us.
Struggle is a part of life, but our struggles can often make life feel overwhelming, stifling, or meaningless. It’s all too easy to get stuck in patterns of living and relating that feel like endless repetitions of old models that seem to generate more problems than they solve. Whether your goal is healing from traumas, improving relationships, addressing complex mental health concerns, or striving for a deeper and more meaningful understanding of life and yourself, I believe that therapy can be an invaluable tool for exploration, healing, and growth.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
