Losing someone you love is one of the most life-altering experiences a person can go through. Everyone grieves differently, on their own time and in their own way. Sharing your story and having someone to be in that space with you, listening without judgment, and giving coping tools is necessary in learning to live with loss and finding hope for your future. I provide a safe place for you on this painful journey, to remind you that you are not alone, and help you find your purpose after loss.

You were not born just to be thin and attractive. Of course it's fine to be those, but don’t confuse that with your PURPOSE. You have so much more to offer this world. I'm recovered from an eating disorder myself, so I know how being consumed with food and keeping your body small keeps our lives small too. I was so scared to let go of micromanaging my weight and trying to perfect, but learning body acceptance, food freedom and self-compassion truly changed my life. And that's why I do this work now... I want YOU to be freed up to have more joy, peace, and meaning in your life. I know it might feel impossible but I promise it's not!

Waitlist for new clients
I focus on providing a safe, calm environment where clients learn to trust. A warm and collaborative environment helps clients to regain a sense of felt safety, autonomy, and empowerment. Clients report they feel seen, heard, accepted, and understood. An environment free of judgement encourages clients to “use their voice,” a gentle prompt my clients hear often. I believe in the resiliency of the human spirit and in the inherent motivation to survive. I will meet you wherever you are on your journey. My approach includes compassionate confrontation and client accountability. If you are ready to work, I am your counselor.

Do you find yourself overwhelmed because you are trying to do too much in your life? Does this leave you feeling stuck and exhausted because you are spending too much energy worrying about what others will think and trying to make them happy? Do you have a secret dark side to your gifts that most people never see? Maybe you find you are taking your life and yourself so seriously that you are too hard on yourself. You never give yourself a break which may lead to “It’s never good enough” or “I’m never enough.” Maybe you don’t give yourself enough credit for how far you’ve actually come and how well you’re actually doing.

I work with people who feel disconnected from themselves. For many reasons, you may have found ways to protect yourself from painful feelings or people who might hurt you. Often, these ways of protecting yourself led you to now feeling disconnected from yourself. I believe that your mental health struggles aren't pathological. What I see is ways you have adapted to survive difficulties in life that have in turn created challenges for you, like relationship issues, struggles with emotional intimacy, anxiety and panic attacks, career burnout, and/or using food or alcohol in ways that make you feel ashamed.

Hello fellow veterans! My name is Cathryn McHenry and I am a trauma-informed marriage and family therapist. Knowing what you want and knowing how to get it, are two very different things, and some obstacles can seem impossible to conquer on your own. That's when having a trail guide is most valuable. After establishing a core foundation of trust and respect, we can scope out that landscape together and create a plan. When life becomes difficult to navigate, I’m here to walk with you.

You know that feeling when you can’t find the remote and your TV is stuck on full volume? Anxiety, OCD, and ADHD can make life feel like that—loud, disorienting, and way out of control. No matter how hard you try to adjust, the noise doesn’t stop. You’re stuck on high alert, managing thoughts and emotions that refuse to sit still.

My practice focuses on treating children and teens with depression, anxiety, attachment issues, eating disorders, substance abuse, attention deficit hyperactivity, and behavioral disorders. Play therapy is my primary tool to help children cope with issues as they grow and develop. Although the child is my client, I work to provide education and support to parents, as the child's primary support system.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
