We all have seasons of life that are more difficult to navigate than others. During those times, having an impartial and nonjudgmental person to talk to can make all the difference. Whether your problems seem big or small, if they are holding you back from your ability to thrive, counseling may help you overcome those barriers.

My ideal client is introspective and motivated to achieve deeper self-understanding. I believe that acknowledging the impact of early childhood experiences and relational patterns on our mental health is fundamental to effective therapy. My ideal client isn’t simply seeking a “quick fix” but is willing to delve into the deeper, often unconscious, aspects of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They are open-minded and willing to consider new interpretations and perspectives about themselves and their challenges. They are committed to a collaborative therapeutic journey and understand that meaningful change takes time & effort.

Humans are relational. This means we are wired to be loved and accepted by those around us. We live among imperfect people, however, so our experience sometimes becomes hurt from unmet needs. The results then become unproductive patterns in our relationships, negative behaviors, a lack of positivity, and a sense of being stuck. For me, the goal of counseling is to heal past hurts and to process how those hurts affect our current choices and relationships. Once we free ourselves from the hurt, anger, guilt and shame of the past, we are open to feel love and to love others.

If you are someone struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, chronic health issues, addiction, trauma (shock, complex and/or attachment trauma), and/or having a hard time living life to its fullest, and you want a safe place to learn, grow and heal, I might be able to help. Sometimes talk therapy alone is enough to resolve whatever ails you, but when there is chronic stress or trauma that has persisted in the mind/body for a prolonged period, therapies that take a "bottom up" approach can have more of a lasting impact.

Hi, if you're like many of my clients, you're hoping to find a therapist who has worked with your kind of worries before, will listen without passing judgement and can offer a safe place to process as well as get some concrete tools to help you feel better. My clients often describe struggling with communication or compromise in relationships, hurting from a big loss, frustration with their kid's problems, feeling anxious, or having a hard time at work. Most of my clients want a therapist who is warm, authentic, can explain the "why" behind their "what" and is willing to engage, not just observe.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
