I am trained in EMDR, TF-CBT, and DBT.
Feeling safe on our own and feeling connected with others is the key to both our happiness and success; it can also be one of the most challenging things we do in our lives. I have spent my career working with a wide variety of individuals to support them in learning strategies to get their needs met in healthy ways. I specialize in working on attachment issues and relationship issues for both children and adults. In our time together, we would work to develop a treatment plan including setting goals and agreeing on interventions to help you to achieve those goals to live a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

Based on my 25 years of experience, I usually recommend a holistic and objective assessment of the problems as part of the solution. These assessments include understanding, first and foremost, the needs of the individual. These can include anxiety, depression, ADHD, peer issues, family problems, stress, and many other things. I treasure the insight the individuals bring to the conversation with their questions, concerns, observations, and overall experiences. I bring these understandings to my therapy sessions and welcome those involved with the individual to lead the individual towards a more passionate, kind, fulfilling life.

I offer research based skills from my training in trauma/PTSD, EFT, EMDR, relational neurobiology & neurodivergent counseling.
I'm a relationship therapist who helps people learn to heal disagreements & enjoy being together. People are social creatures. We are meant to be connected. The problem is, we are sometimes not very good at communicating what we need/want. We misunderstand, misspeak & have unconscious reactions to triggers. We react out of fear, anger & pain. In short, misunderstandings & reactions get us into a world of hurt! My job is to slow everything down-to think about problems differently, look for patterns & help find the "why" under the "what". We can work to redefine relationships as safe/dependable & build new ways of being together.

After completing a MA in Psychology at The State University of New York at New Paltz, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology at The University of South Dakota, I became certified in EMDR and trauma healing bodywork including Transforming Touch and Somatic Resilience and Regulation.
If you are someone struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, chronic health issues, addiction, trauma (shock, complex and/or attachment trauma), and/or having a hard time living life to its fullest, and you want a safe place to learn, grow and heal, I might be able to help. Sometimes talk therapy alone is enough to resolve whatever ails you, but when there is chronic stress or trauma that has persisted in the mind/body for a prolonged period, therapies that take a "bottom up" approach can have more of a lasting impact.

I am EMDR certified which is useful for traumatic experiences.
You're already feeling overwhelmed and things continue piling up. You question whether your unhappiness is situational or if it has something to do with your past. You want to feel better, but life seems out of balance and you feel hopeless. You need help getting back on track and sorting through what is contributing to your low mood, anxious thoughts, or troubled sleep.

My diverse background and down to earth nature is a key element in my counseling style. I believe that for counseling to be most effective it must be done in an environment that is comfortable to my clients. My counseling expertise is working with clients of domestic violence, sexual assault, recovery, PTSD, anxiety disorders, foster families/children, adjustment disorders and LGBT community. I am trained in EMDR, Brain Spotting and Experiential modes of therapy which I combine with other traditional modes of therapy.

This might include various mindfulness practices, emotion and body awareness, EMDR, cognitive-behavioral work, or various other approaches.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or anxious in your life or relationship? My understanding is that life involves all of who we are - the interplay between mind, emotions, body, and spirit. If something feels out of balance or lacking in your life, causing you anxiety, depression, anger, self-doubt, confusion, or a feeling of things being out of control, then my approach to counseling can help. I have found that increasing one's self awareness and self acceptance are the building blocks of any change process, and I will work with you to honor your process while identifying your preferred direction for positive change.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
