I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image. I also work with those struggling with anxiety, depression, and life transitions. I have experience working at the PHP and IOP levels of care for eating disorders. I strive to build a collaborative relationship with my clients and provide them with a sense of hope. The process of eating disorder recovery is not linear and can be challenging. However, treatment is most successful when intervention is early. It is important to have a support system through eating disorder treatment and through the therapeutic process.

Substance use disorders, eating disorders, & other destructive behaviors are often used as a way to cope with emotional distress and/or avoid pain. I help individuals heal by being curious & compassionate about the destructive behaviors to discover what purpose they serve. This often looks like assessing biological & social factors, healing unresolved trauma, grief, attachment issues, and learning new coping skills. I utilize a collaborative & holistic approach to treatment. Together, we can heal the pain, and find new ways to cope with emotional distress.

With my 20-plus years of treating eating disorders, training in family-based treatment, and being a parent myself I invite you to reach out to me to discuss if family-based treatment is a good fit for your teen and family.
Is your child or teen struggling with anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating? Or do they struggle with "extreme picking eating". You may feel worried or even hopeless about your teen's eating. You may be unsure how to help or what to say to your teen. Perhaps you have tried everything and nothing is getting better. Whether your teen has an eating disorder or "extreme picky eating" (Even if they have had treatment before.) I work collaboratively with you and your teen to provide a path forward. I empower parents and teens to utilize their strengths to move out of their eating disorder and into life.

Symptoms are signals received from both the conscious mind from various sources throughout the body, an indication that something is wrong. By avoiding theses indicators, clients with extending and spiraling issues are able to address symptoms that would otherwise end in a complex and convoluted crises.
Obviously our weaknesses and issues, such as anger, insecurity, fear of intimacy, and/or the need to control are expressions of a wounded child within. Much of society has been wounded through abuse or dysfunctional families. Unresolved conflicts tend to carry-over into our adult functioning.

Every person I work with is different, but the process is always the same: weed through the noise, dig to the root cause, and begin the journey of replanting together. I believe we all have the strength and capacity to heal.

In meeting individuals and families, my focus is to gain insight into the complex history of each person. After building a therapeutic relationship, I assess what modality would align with their specific needs. I like to set realistic and attainable goals with each client that I work with. Much of my past and current clientele has consisted of teens and college aged students working through transitions. I gather much of my experience from working as a recruiter for more than 15 years.

It is easy to admire the strength it takes to climb the mountain, but few people see or value the strength it takes to climb out of the abyss, and back to level ground. This is often true, even for those who are escaping the deepest of pits. It is vital, then, that people learn to celebrate every step of progress they make. This is what creates hope, which is the prerequisite for change. We are built for growth, and our ability to change and to heal is staggering when we understand exactly what our brain, body, and heart are capable of.

Eating Disorders Therapists
What happens in therapy for eating disorders?
In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.
What therapy types help with eating disorders?
Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.
What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?
The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.
What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?
Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.
How long does therapy last for eating disorders?
Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
