It’s easy to find yourself in a place where nothing seems to be going right. Whether it’s a deteriorating relationship, anger, worry, or hopelessness, you know that something needs to change.

We go through so much in our lives. Love and loss molds us to who we are today. People who have come me for counseling seek a voice, want a safe place to share their life's experiences and have a need to be understood. I offer a kind, non judgmental atmosphere, some guidance through points & places where change has happened or where change is needed in our lives. Together we will learn more about ourselves. We will continue to grow.

The world can be a tough place for neurodivergent folks. ADHD, autism, chronic illness, trauma, disability and mental health struggles can sometimes make meeting your own basic, everyday needs feel exhausting. Keeping up with the responsibilities and demands of life might leave you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, ashamed, lonely or embarrassed. Other people don't seem to understand why it's so hard for you and sometimes neither do you! You have so many strengths, but it feels like they're buried under layers of self-doubt, frustration and burnout. You're not broken. Your needs are different. You deserve support. We SO get it.

My background as a counselor in the hospital setting, gives me direct insight into your struggles with a chronic illness or losing those close to you.
Have you recently lost a loved one unexpectedly or had a loved one die of a chronic or terminal illness? Are you struggling with a new or long term medical diagnosis? How do you deal with people who just don't get it? You may be experiencing feelings of profound sadness, anger, loneliness, abandonment, and hopelessness. Talking with someone who is not emotionally involved in your personal struggles, often can be a transformative experience towards developing feelings of acceptance, peace, and comfort.

I love working with women, parents, and educators juggling work-life demands, and adolescents/young-adults adjusting to adulthood. We each have a fundamental need for connection, autonomy, and belonging. Motivation and behavior are specific and variable. I listen, reflect, and ask questions. I translate the science of wellbeing into actionable practices to help clients connect their needs, values, and strengths with their actions and visions; to raise consciousness, cultivate emotional intelligence, explore limiting beliefs, master mindsets, build relational life skills, lean into their purposes; live, love, and lead with intention.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
