As a mother of three, and a counselor for over 20 years, I know how difficult it is to grow up in this world today. Therapy provides a safe space to work through those things in our lives that are difficult. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and young adults. I use play therapy, art therapy and talk therapy with my clients. I strive to offer hope and solutions to families with children dealing with such issues as trauma, grief, loss, abuse, depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, self harm, and much more. My clients are also those that need solutions for navigating behavior, peer relations, ADHD, ODD or autism.

I am Lorin Williams East, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 6 years of clinical experience. I have had the honor of working alongside survivors of abuse and assault, which has given me a deep understanding of how people can live with traumas they have experienced. I use a mix of Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Dialectical (DBT), Feminist, and Trauma Focused therapies. I believe we all deserve compassion and a space to be authentic while growing and learning to function in each individual life.

With over 20 clinicians on staff, from students who offer low fee counseling to our associates and licensed clinicians with more experience and specializations, Roots wants to be here to help. We see kids, teens, college students, adults, couples, and families, and we regularly offer low-fee groups and workshops for folks that are looking to supplement their individual therapy or for folks who just want to grow a little with others from the community.

I specialize in working with adults and older teens (16+) experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma (PTSD and CPTSD), substance abuse, phobias and family or origin issues. Each of us has a story to tell about how the events in our lives have left impressions on us. I believe many people's symptoms are adaptations they have created to protect themselves after trauma. I consider myself honored to join people on their path toward recovery and change. I have been providing virtual therapy since March of 2020 and I have come to love it. I already have a big personality so my light shines through in this setting.

I have experience counseling adolescents and adults with eating disorders, anxiety, mild depression, and trauma.
Life is hard. Sometimes we struggle with thoughts of not being good enough. It feels like your brain is working against you. It's hard to eat, manage anxiety, or just enjoy life. If any of these statements ring a bell, please reach out. I want to provide a safe space where you can say all of the things you're keeping in and work toward a different experience.

I have had extensive experience working with at-risk youth and those who have suffered from trauma in their early lives.
Has your child has started behaving out of character leading you to wonder what they are going through? Perhaps they are struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, or anger. Play therapy offers an avenue to gain insight into what your child is struggling with and can help them gain confidence and explore their emotions in a safe environment where they can freely express themselves. I strive to build a therapeutic egalitarian relationship where we work together in order to help resolve the issues you and your family could be struggling with.

My private counseling practice offers services to individuals, couples, family and children whose past trauma and or mental health interfere with their daily life.
I have witnessed the value of resilience through healing. In my practice, I work with clients to offer individualized treatment to who you are as person, rather than cookie cutter services. The stigma associated with therapy and mental health, especially in the minority communty is damaging. Our fear of looking “crazy”, especially in todays' society continues to hold us back. You are not crazy for getting the help you need. You deserve to heal. Your community needs you to heal so you can give back in a healthy way. Your healing is your community healing.

In the heart of every therapeutic journey lies the transformative power of genuine human connection. As a dedicated therapist, I believe that healing begins when individuals are seen, heard, and understood within the context of a trusting and compassionate relationship. I now have multiple years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and couples who struggle with PTSD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and addictions. One of the greatest privileges of this work has been witnessing the reconnection that occurs while working with couples who are navigating difficult periods in their relationship.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
