I believe that getting to the core of the pain we feel is what brings us closer to our mental health goals and the life we want to live.
Have you been feeling overwhelmed by your emotions and not know where to go from there? Have you started feeling hopeless or defeated? When life gets busy and responsibilities stack up, it may start to feel like we won’t ever catch up. What if you could get separation from those overwhelming feelings? What if there were a way to regain control in your life, get your energy back, and feel a renewed sense of hope? Therapy can give us hope and a way to learn new ways to cope with life's challenges.

Healing begins with connection and acceptance. The things that happen to us may shape us, but they do not define who we are. My goal is to help you understand how your big and small traumas have impacted your choices to this point, and how to move forward into a healthier life. Many clients seek me out because they have experienced significant trauma that is impacting their daily lives. Others are experiencing anxiety, grief, spiritual issues, chronic illness, or life transitions. For couples and families, I seek to help them identify and alter the patterns in their relationships that are hindering connection and healing.

I view life as a journey, and while at times we all get caught up in the storms of uncertainty, disappointment, hopelessness that cause us great pain there are opportunities for change. People are often in need of help because they want a place that provides safety, security, and hope. I help explore new options to resolve problems. I make every effort to provide my patients with a safe place to talk about their problems, hopes, and dreams, while striving to be a light for them when they are in the darkness of despair.

Close to my heart is helping others with chronic pain and illness.
Everyone has some sort of baggage, pain, or issues that can make them feel stuck in life. I get it and have been there myself. So instead of coming at you with every therapy or skill in the book, I promise to first be with you, and present in where you’re at. I won’t rush you but instead will help you within your own timeframe. The therapeutic relationship is the most important part of therapy and we want to make sure it's the right fit. This is why I offer a free 20 min phone consultation because you matter. Partnering together means having a healthy respect for you and the process.

Some of my specialties include depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse, chronic illness/pain, grief and loss, caregiver burnout, relationship issues, self-esteem and self-worth, overeating/weight issues, stress management, spiritual concerns, financial problems, and career counseling.
As a therapist, I seek to empower my clients with the knowledge that they hold the key to their well being and help them develop the skills they need to access this ability on a daily basis. My compassion, empathy, and love of people along with my own life journey is what compelled me to enter the field of counseling. My primary theoretical model is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), combined with faith-based counseling. My counseling philosophy is from a holistic point of view addressing the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of a person. I also believe therapy must be tailored to the individual as no two people are the same.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help individuals struggling with numerous issues including anxiety, depression, and pain, and I am a certified SYMBIS+ practitioner (an empirically grounded marriage/premarital therapy system).
I believe in the resilience of the human spirit. Life brings many hardships and challenges, and it brings us opportunities to learn and grow. I have worked with many people who battle anxiety and depression, and still others working to move past traumatic experiences or addictions. Whatever circumstance you may be facing, there is hope! I believe that people in need of positive change desire an element of self-efficacy and control over the areas of their life that can indeed be brought under their power. This sense of control then contributes to better relationships, health, attitudes, and a more positive life!

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
