My primary goal as a counselor is to walk alongside people that are in the courageous pursuit of positive change through providing consistent encouragement, and ethical care. There is freedom to come as you are – your feelings and experiences are valid. Counseling will offer a safe environment for you to explore anything you want to bring into the therapy room.

My clients are adults of all ages working through a wide range of issues, such as depression, anxiety, addiction, grief, spiritual disconnection, relationship difficulties, and more. I have a particular interest and additional experience with the LGBTQ population, young adults working to establish their identities, those working through painful grief journeys, and those who are exploring their faith or spirituality. My goal is always to create a space free from judgment where you can explore who you are, who you want to be, and how you become that person!

It takes great courage to go to counseling because it requires us to be vulnerable. The paradox is that it is precisely through our vulnerability that we arrive at greater joy and belonging to ourselves and to others. Let me start off by saying that counseling can really make a difference in the quality of our lives. With my clinical experience and background, I help people find their true selves and engage life from that deeper place. Things that cause us anxiety and depression are seen with proper perspective and life becomes smoother and more joyful! Hablo espanol!

Life is hard. It's full of trials and tribulations, tragedies and miseries. Yet life can also be so much more if we learn to see the beauty in creation and in others. If you're feeling like your eyes are closed to this beauty, you are unable to see it, or that something in your past/present is keeping you 'stuck," then I may be able to help. Therapy is not magic, it does not provide a quick fix. Therapy is hard, but it is worthwhile and good. If you are looking for a guide, a sounding board, a clinician, someone to walk this journey with you, I may just be that person.

My name is Donn Edgington. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor for the State of Texas. I work with individuals and families for a wide variety of reasons for seeking services. I work with teenagers up to senior adults. I do Telehealth and can work with many situations including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and other issues. I am a cognitive therapist. I believe that the way we think, feel, and behave are all intertwined, and if we can change one of those three, the other two will change. I try to make my sessions comfortable for the client. I have been told I am easy to speak with and I listen well.

As an attorney-turned-therapist, I help clients struggling with the demanding world of high-stakes professions or owning a business. I help couples struggling with the conflict that can come from these demands as well. When you're striving for success, trying to keep everyone else happy, you can easily find that you've lost yourself in the process. I know what it's like to work in a job that you don't entirely hate, but where you aren't really happy either. And I know the toll it takes on your personal life and relationships. That's where I can help you. I specialize in individuals and couples struggling with these types of issues.

Now, this very moment, as you look at my profile on your screen, might not seem like the point in time when things can change, but in fact, it is. But your mind is a whirl of questions-can he help? can he understand ME? will I be judged or labeled? How do I know if he really cares, or if its just a job? How will Dolan be different from the last therapist I saw who never seemed to really get me, but pretended to? There is only one way to find the answers- pick up the phone and call, or send an email. I will reply promptly and we'll get to know one another as I share my 40 years of experience doing therapy. I look forward to it.

If you are a person who has been struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, stress, burnout, or overall has been trying different things on your own to fight for your mental health, then I may be the person for you. I love working with people who are ready to put in the work, willing to fight to take back control of our lives, relationships, mind, and overall mental health in a realistic and goal oriented manner. This person is a good candidate for therapy in general because of a strong mindset to change. In addition, we may be a good fit due to having similar mindsets as we both will treat each other with respect.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
