I have worked for family violence shelters, substance abuse treatment facilities, and the local mental health agency.
Life is challenging, and sometimes it can be overwhelming. When you are dealing with depression, anxiety, or trauma, it is OK to reach out for help. All of us need that from time to time. I can provide you with a space to step back and look at where you have been and where you are headed. I can give you the support you need to make the changes that will put you back on the road to a better life.

My goal is to help you make the best of your unique life circumstances and work towards being the person you want to be. I work with mood and anxiety disorders of all kinds, and also enjoy working with people navigating major life transitions, people in substance use recovery, dieting recovery, and those setting boundaries with complex families of origin. Prior to becoming a therapist I worked in public policy for over a decade, and have a deep understanding of the societal structures in place that feel immovable, and yet greatly impact our mental health.

We all want to do better at something and to make positive change. But it can be stressful and it can feel overwhelming. Many of us have tried but cannot seem to make it last, or maybe we just don’t know where to start. If you feel that way, I would love to help. My passion is for empowering you. I want to help you better manage your feelings and help you make those difficult choices – to help you cut through whatever stands between you and the person you really want to be.

Substance Use Disorders and Evauations, OCD and other anxiety disorders as well as mood disorders.
Your peace doesn't have to be limited. The devastation of betrayal, abandonment, divorce, disease, or death can change you instantly. Perhaps resentment, depression and anxiety are interfering with the quality of your life. Is addiction keeping you in bondage? Is Post-Acute Withdrawal limiting your day to day functioning?Trauma keeping you from experiencing life? If anything is preventing you from getting to a healthy place, maybe it's time to examine what your next steps will be. Don't allow fear, work, and life's hustle to keep you from having peace. Find peace regardless of your circumstances. Life can get better!

I work with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, isolation, disabilities, and issues with relationships.
A strong sense of self and well-being. Healthy connection in relationships. Positive, vibrant sexuality. Most of us want a meaningful life infused with these qualities, yet many struggle with the impact of grief, trauma, and troubled relationships. Through integration of Somatic Experiencing, a body-centered psychotherapy, with psychodynamic, relational counseling, I support clients to find their own innate ability to grow, to change and to find their unique path to healing. Whether you are seeking support to make a few changes in your life, or a partner and ally on your journey of transformation, let's talk and see whether we might work together.

My clients often turn to substance use, negative self-talk, avoidance, and impulsivity to deal with intense emotions and they spiral from there.
We all begin the therapeutic journey with our own set of strengths and needs. Sometimes our uniqueness promotes creativity, new perspectives, and collaboration. Other times our uniqueness can be terminal; leading to emptiness, feeling disconnected from self and others, and beliefs that mental health treatment may work for other people, but it won’t work for you. Therapy is not about “getting over” events and issues; it’s about understanding your triggers and learning how to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so that you can move forward and continue to build a fulfilling life.

Substance use and gambling can be stressful.
Are you concerned that your substance use is causing some problems for you? Substance use is on a continuum, with abstinence on one end and severe abuse, or addiction, on the other. Historically, approaches to substance use treatment have been binary—you either use or you do not. While this approach is effective for some people, for most it feels restrictive and at times punitive. The goal of therapy is for you to determine—you may want to examine your use, minimize it, work toward ceasing use all together or even maintain positive changes you have already made.

We too often think of treating substance use problems as a one-size-fits-all approach.
I've focused my practice on substance use issues and addictive problems in people lives. For years I worked with women in eating disorders treatment utilizing an addictions model. Later I focused on men, and substance use disorders. Problems can stem from using drugs as an unproductive coping skill to a deeper more physiologically based problem. Our first job together is to find what your specific problem looks like and then find a way forward that's suited to your needs. In addition I also offer services evaluating clients for Substance Use Disorders in Family Law and Criminal cases.

I specialize in working with men navigating complex issues such as infidelity, substance abuse, impulse control, relational violence, and difficulties with emotional regulation.
Do you often feel lonely in crowded room? Do you get lost in reckless behaviors just for that brief moment where you remember how it feels to be alive? Have you followed the script to provide, to protect, to work hard, to be stoic, only to wake up and find yourself living a life that does not feel like it belongs to you? Often times the behaviors that cause us the most pain and disconnection from ourselves and others are motivated by self-protection. My hope is to co-create an environment of relational safety where you and I can honor and release the defensive strategies of your wounded heart.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
