I believe in the basic goodness of man kind and the client's right to self-determination. We are all doing the best we can. Sometimes experiences from the past affect our present and we need help in clarifying the differences; accepting our past and our present self. You deserve to live your life fully present.

Psychotherapy is an art and a science. The art is the use of oneself combining the intuitive sense; the naturalness in expressing comfort and caring; the ability to relate to all people; and the comfort in self-disclosure. The science is the skills and techniques we learn and the knowing what techniques will be helpful in moving clients beyond their walls towards a healthier life Please go to my website at http://www.rachelgunner.com to read my philosophy about psychotherapy, coaching and mediation.

Has your life taken an unexpected turn? Do the circumstances you face feel frightening or overwhelming? Are you managing symptoms of depression and/or anxiety? Life demands change from all of us. Therapy can be helpful as we move through life's transitions. I work with issues that arise from our significant relationships, our career, and the general issues of grief and loss that inevitably arise over the course of life. If you are considering therapy for yourself or your family members, I hope you will feel free to call.

While I do explore past trauma, I find that understanding the present moment allows a different perspective on who you are as an individual and how you connect to the world around us.
As we move through life, we are faced with challenges that at times make us question who we are and how we connect with ourselves and the world around you. Wether you are going through a transition in your life (big or small), are navigating a challenging situation, experiencing grief or finding it difficult to manage daily life, therapy is here to guide you in exploring your thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgemental space to help you in your journey to re-connecting with yourself.

With a combination of therapeutic techniques such as CBT and EMDR, I address co-occurring or underlying mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and trauma, along with relationship challenges, tailoring each approach to your unique needs.
Writing a Psychology Today profile feels a lot like writing a dating profile—trying to stand out and hoping to connect with someone looking for what I offer. Whether you're single and searching, in a relationship and unsure, or committed and seeking deeper connection, I understand the challenges you face. The ups and downs of dating, the uncertainty, and fear of rejection can be daunting. Or maybe you're in a relationship, questioning if this is the right person, struggling with where to compromise, and fearing settling. For those in committed relationships, you may want to resolve conflict, and deepen your connection.

We are all complex individuals shaped by our environments and a collection of pasts before us that we may not always understand. While I have worked with various focal populations on a wide variety of issues, the most common presenting needs are related to anxiety, depression, internal blocks, transitioning gender identities, coming out, recovering from various forms of trauma, and life transitions. I am passionate about providing trauma informed care in a world that is heavily dosed with unhelpful memes, misguided self help books, and armchair philosophy. I am here to help dare you to be yourself through radical self acceptance.

I specialize in treating trauma, attachment wounds, shame, insecurity and other issues through a variety of traditional and experiential modalities.
I have over a decade of experience in the mental health field in Austin, working with an immensely diverse range of clients in an equally diverse range of environments—from public elementary schools to trails and pastures. I began my career as a campus-based therapist and case manager working in schools providing trauma therapy to children deemed at-risk. From there, I switched from the school setting to working on a horse ranch providing trauma-focused equine therapy to children and families. Prior to opening my own private practice, I was the clinical director of a group practice in Austin focused on inclusive mental healthcare.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
