I provide a supportive, safe, and respectful relationship to help clients reach clearly specified goals.
I treat high-functioning clients experiencing emotional or physical stress, due to problems in work; relationships (boundaries, assertiveness, anger management); life transitions; or life changes related to loss (such as death, disability/illness, or divorce). My stress model includes strategies for effective problem-solving, rational thinking, effective coping, and stress resilience. I also see couples motivated to either improve their current relationship or prepare for a future together. I use an active interactional style to provide support, insight, and practical strategies for coping with life's challenges.

I provide psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to individuals and couples as well as supervision to other clinicians.
As a psychologist and Lacanian psychoanalyst, I believe that psychotherapy works best when you feel free to express and explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences-including the ones that feel difficult to put into words. Words have the power both to hurt and to heal. I am trained to listen and intervene in a way that can have many benefits, including relief from suffering and substantive, lasting changes such as personal growth, increased relationship satisfaction and life fulfillment, and an improved ability to work and succeed. I provide a comfortable, professional environment in which I aim to help you meet your goals.

I specialize in working with those impacted by painful life events, individuals, couples & families, as well as professionals.
No one gets to adulthood without living through painful experiences. You may be feeling the effects of a single traumatic incident (sexual victimization, a tragic natural disaster, or the sudden loss of a dear one), or you may be struggling with the weight of years of hurtful events. The term "trauma" seems like a buzzword these days, but for some of us, trauma has deeply influenced our lives. When we experience suffering, we can feel like it becomes our identity. But it doesn't have to be that way. Healing from trauma -- single incident or multiple events -- is possible.

I believe in emphasizing the development of a collaborative relationship between therapist and client, while fostering a safe, nonjudgmental environment that gives people the freedom to explore and understand their feelings and thoughts.
My goal is to help those suffering from emotional or relationship problems, self-defeating patterns of behavior, and recurring periods of uncertainty or self-doubt. I also specialize in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression, anxiety-related disorders, personality disorders, and PMDD. My approach to therapy involves understanding how difficult experiences from our past can affect the way we feel and behave in the present. Our past experiences are often the reason we sometimes struggle with the same emotional and relationship problems throughout life. It is only through understanding our past struggles can we expect to achieve a lasting and meaningful change in the present.

Buried and unmet needs surface when dealing with issues of anxiety or depression in individuals and most surely in conflict resolutions amongst couples and families.
Life can seem a series of barriers and obstacles that present difficulties in allowing us to be our full and authentic self. How we think and what we believe, whether true or not, often drive our perceptions towards actions. Gaps can exist in our own self-image and what we tell ourselves. Sometimes the gap is based on past experiences and labels others may have placed on us. I believe that bridging these gaps in understanding can be transformative and freeing. However, the steps to seek assistance in exploring how we are affected by these deeply held beliefs can be a tough one.

Making the decision on which therapist to work with is based on many factors. Perhaps the most important factor is finding someone you are comfortable with so they can be of help. My goal in working with clients is to start by establishing a nonjudgmental, yet honest, relationship that is supportive enough to explore topics and gain insight into issues most relevant to them. I have experience working with clients from all backgrounds with a variety of difficulties, including relationship issues, life transitions, depression, identity struggles, anxiety, and grief.

I see couples/families and individually as needed.
My ideal client is one primarily motivated for change. I'm not an "ah huh, mmmm, I see" therapist. I am very active in sessions so my client wants honest, direct feedback and education on issues and new skills for more success. I am also patient, seasoned and aware that fear and habits make change hard, so I offer significant support and positive encouragement. My therapy involves Cognitive/Behavioral techniques meaning: understanding you "head chatter" and skills to decrease or make more positive (often driven by anxiety), and changing or creating "actions" that increase positive results and confidence.

I am passionate about working with adolescents and adults ranging from issues of anxiety, depression, relationship issues, spirituality, and life transitions.
We can all struggle with forgetting our value, that our life and story have meaning and purpose. Whether it be your current life circumstances, broken relationships, or shame that has been weighing you down for far too long, you may have forgotten your own value. It is scary to feel hopeless, to question yourself, make sense of your story, and wonder "what's next for me?" It is daunting to release control over the unknown in whatever season you may be in. You don't have to face it all alone. I would love to journey with you.

My specialties are men’s issues, adolescence (ages 15- 18), couples therapy, BlPOC mental health, addictions and substance abuse, identity, anxiety, stress management, and faith-based counseling.
I believe in the beauty of a sound mind and mental clarity, knowing the way we live successfully correlates with how we think and feel. I also see the importance of the holistic approach to mental health. I recognize the connection between the physical, spiritual, and mental aspects of the human experience, and want to see my clients balance and succeed in each area for optimum wellness. Core to my belief is the truth that when we change our brains and mindsets, we change our lives. Each person has a specific purpose for living. I offer a non-judgmental environment where clients are able to express their thoughts and emotions.

I offer strong specialty in treating anxiety and depression, trauma (PTSD), and relationship/sexual problems (gay & straight). I find it especially rewarding working with grieving clients, those suffering from chronic & terminal illness, men's issues, and helping men & women heal from emotional, physical & sexual abuse.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
