Hello there. My name is John Trader and I have been a mental health counselor for over a decade. I am devoted to helping people with trauma be able to examine how it continues to affect their lives. I love to see breakthroughs with individuals and couples. I am passionate about creating safe spaces for people to explore neurodivergence and sexual identity. I am LGBTQIA+ and anti-racist. With mixed feelings, I am retiring from the world's best job. But I am looking forward to great things. My retirement from my Roanoke, TX private practice is effective late May, 2024. Former clients may contact me if needed through the email or phone number listed and I will leave my website up with my contact information. I was not able to contact clients directly whom I haven't see in over 6 months. If I haven't spoken with you about my retirement, please know I wish you the very best and honor our work together. Accepting new clients. Tuesday evening and weekend hours available in person. Telehealth other times. Supervised by Dr. Misti Sparks, LMFT-S. I enjoy working with couples - communication & conflict, family growth & life stages, etc. I have experience with addiction, adolescents, young adults. I've walked with many people through crises, loss, and big life changes. I believe stuff from our past - family of origin issues, abuse and trauma, grief, etc. - shows up in and affects our present. I hope therapy helps people come to terms with the past, and address concerns of the present, so they can have a healthier and happier future.

I have worked with families and individuals dealing with substance abuse issues for many years, and am skilled at making what is seemingly an irrational disorder, more understandable to the individual as well as the family.
I have a straight-forward, solution-based focus on making progress quickly. I am known for helping parents reduce conflicts with their sons, in particular, and have an emphasis on making parenting boys much more enjoyable and effective. I also have extensive experience in helping couples become more understandable to one another, and in providing them with relationship skills which enable both individuals to have their needs met.

While winding down a highly successful career working with individuals and their families as a Certified Public Accountant, I chose to turn my attention from the financial and tax issues of my clients to their psychological, emotional, and relationship issues to which I was so often exposed as their CPA. I am experienced in dealing with a wide range of interpersonal issues, including anxiety, depression, panic, burnout, grief, self-esteem, family relations, trust, and divorce. Many of these I have experienced in my own life. In my practice, I follow the Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) philosophy of counseling.

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and have over 14 years of experience in working with men struggling with sexual addictions.
I specialize in working with men around areas of sexual brokenness. I seek to help men change how sexual issues such as pornography, masturbation, anonymous sexual partners and impulse control affect their lives. My ideal client is a man who is struggling sexually, who feels like there is no hope. He thinks that if people really knew what he had done, he would lose the people closest to him. His guilt and shame constantly hound him, and he feels like the cycle of addiction can't be broken. He is looking for hope and a safe place to talk through his problems.

Do you find that you have always felt different or highly sensitive? Are you anxious and overwhelmed in social situations or maybe noting that you have sensory sensitivities, or processing issues that make certain interactions challenging? This can be very alienating and exhausting to manage and can lead to self esteem issues and challenges like anxiety, depression, and increased instances of trauma. You may already have a diagnosis such as Autism, ADHD, Schizophrenia or Bipolar. In my therapy, I pull away from harmful "cure" based approaches, and instead, into approaches that nurture self-acceptance and healing.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
