My name is Deborah Kirkland. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over eight years of experience counseling in a non-profit trauma center. Many of my clients have experienced childhood abuse and neglect as well as adverse life experiences into adulthood. I have worked with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds, socio-economic statuses, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Seeking treatment for mental health takes courage. It is not easy to open up the most private aspects of our lives to a complete stranger. Thus, my philosophy is to build a trusting therapeutic relationship.

Do you find yourself wishing for better days? Have you lost interest in the things that once brought you joy? Are your basic responsibilities weighing you down? Life doesn't have to be about exhaustion and overwhelm day in and day out. We can work together to improve your current circumstances. I love listening to my client's stories and helping them put the pieces together. At times we may mix conversation with psychoeducation in coping skills, mindfulness, and meditation. Bravely sharing your story in counseling allows you a rare opportunity to be heard without judgment. This is a priceless opportunity to process your experience.

I enjoy working with adults who are facing big life transitions, whether due to changes in family, a shift in responsibilities, or entering a new phase of life. Clients often report a sense of overwhelm during these times. My approach to counseling aims to help people clarify what really matters to them so that they can rediscover a sense of direction and choice. I use a focused ACT approach that aims to help identify personal values and support you in pursuing meaningful goals.

Often times we find ourselves going through the motions in life and not feeling "alive". We can't seem to pinpoint what it is that’s creating that disconnect, but we know we want to feel better. I'd love to help you with a guided self-discovery, an understanding of exactly what those obstacles are, and how to move past them to help you live the life you've imagined!

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a doctorate in Creativity and Spirituality. I'm passionate about being fully present with my clients while supporting their growth and transformation. I find there is inherent wisdom in body, mind, and spirit that, when supported, seeks opportunities to heal and balance. One of my specialties is LGBTQIA affirmative therapy. I also love working with artists and creators and weaving elements of creativity into the therapeutic experience. I'm comfortable with integrating spiritual issues, somatic therapies, medical concerns, and dealing with grief.

Do you feel exhausted? Like you have been sprinting on a hamster wheel not actually going anywhere? Like you’re at the end of your rope with no where else to go? Do you miss the husband you married on your wedding day and feel like you’re waking up next to a stranger? Do you feel unheard, disconnected, and frustrated by your kids who likewise feel the same but can’t figure out why? Does it feel like everyone on your social media feed has it together (or can admit that they don’t in the caption of their perfectly filtered picture…) when it’s taking everything within you just to make it through the rest of the day?

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
