I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I hold a Baccalaureate degree (BA) in Humanities, and a Master’s degree (MS) in Counseling. My formal education and professional experience have prepared me to counsel individuals, couples, families and groups. My primary theoretical approach is cognitive behavior therapy. This is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving.

My ideal client would be where you find yourself trying to hold it together, and you may not look for help until a situation has gotten worse and its almost a crisis. That situation will significantly affect your life, and you will hit a breaking point. This might be self-esteem, anxiety, depression, adjusting to life changes, codependency, grief, health issues, or just feeling stuck. It's hard to ask for help but here you are, and what you thought might work is not working any more. You would find yourself in my office feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, confused but feeling like you had taken the first step to finding HOPE.

I believe we were created to live life in relationship with others and that therapy can help us tap into our potential to live enjoyable, more meaningful lives. From our earliest memories as part of our development, we begin to learn and practice how to interact with others as part of a family system. Understanding these experiences influences how we relate to family, friends, and peers as well as impacts our ability to adapt successfully in life.

You feel stuck. Trauma does that. It leaves you feeling disconnected from yourself and others. When you are disconnected from yourself, it's really difficult to make decisions, feel motivated to do anything, or feel like you are living at all. When you are disconnected from others, it's isolating, lonely, and can cause ruptures in important relationships. Trauma is any experience that is too much for your system to handle and can occur at any point in your life. These experiences leave you feeling unbalanced, scattered, and, at times, tormented by the past. You long to feel like yourself again, or maybe for the first time.

I am originally from Virginia but have also lived in Arkansas and Texas. I am the father of five adult children and the husband to a wife of many years. I worked in blue collar fields before and during my counseling training, painting houses and repairing mechanical components aboard Navy war ships. Since college I have been in private counseling practice, worked at a psychiatric hospital, detention center, group home, and home for adults with head injuries, served as church counselor and education director, and taught psychology courses at multiple universities in Texas and Arkansas.
