Has caregiving become your prominent role? Are you part of the sandwich generation? Are you squeezed between caring for a child/grandchild and aging parents, relatives, siblings, or friends? Middle-aged women are increasingly faced with caring for multiple generations within a family system. Nearly half of middle-aged Americans are currently experiencing this “sandwiched” effect, including the anxiety and grief that goes along with it.

I particularly enjoy working with teens who are having a tough time. I have worked with teens struggling with identity issues, school attendance, and alcohol/drug dependency. Is your life a little overwhelming right now? Do you sometimes feel anxious or down, not knowing where to turn? If so, it might help to talk with someone who doesn't have an agenda, and only wants to walk with you during this difficult, confusing time. I'd like to talk with you about how you feel, and help you figure out what you need. We will determine what areas are troubling you, and where to begin!

Life is hard and suffering is normal. It’s an inevitable part of being human. Most of us, often from a young age, develop different patterns or defenses to manage our suffering in order to keep our heads above water. This can look like many different things: numbing our emotions, self-criticism, addiction, anxiety, self-sabotage - the list goes on. We do these things not because anything is inherently wrong with us, but because for a long time, these patterns help us survive. Clients often come to me when they reconcile the fact that these patterns are no longer working - and instead, they’re making them miserable.

Do you have a really hard time being kind to yourself especially when you mess up or are feeling inadequate? Maybe your anxiety is loud and you find yourself living in your head a lot, future tripping, and missing out on being present and connected to the stuff you care about. Maybe body image issues have been pulling you down since you were a teen. On the outside it looks that you have it all together, but internally, you feel like you're falling short, failing, and not doing enough. Without effective skills, these challenges can take a toll on well-being and can make life smaller and smaller and more and more restrictive.

Now accepting new clients! Our clients come in overwhelmed and usually juggling to prove their worth, causing anxiety and burnout. You might be giving away all your energy to relationships, friendships, work, or school. You might viscerally feel the weight of perfectionism or over responsibility in your life and relationships, but it seems oh so impossible to protect your time and energy! We know what it's like to be downright exhausted from over performing for others while under delivering to yourself.

Therapy can help us process and understand past experiences; manage fears and worries about the future; and create headspace to enjoy the here-and-now.
Navigating the mental health world and finding a good therapist can be challenging, especially when you are trying to find someone that gets you and acknowledges your culture and background. I commend you for taking the first step in your healing journey. Do some of these sound familiar? You recognize the importance of healing generational trauma; you want to enjoy the present-moment however, your mind gets stuck in the past or the future; you want to create meaningful connections, but you end up sabotaging your relationships; you want to embrace your culture and traditions while recognizing unhealthy generational patterns.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
