Life is full of ups and downs. A big transition, the death of a loved one, or a traumatic event can show up as anxiety, depression, addiction, or even physical pain. These feelings don’t have to linger. With evidence-based therapies, such as EMDR, I can help you overcome traumatic events or simply unhealthy (and often untrue) ways of thinking of yourself and emerge as the “new” you with the clarity, confidence, and joy needed to live the life you deserve.

I feel that the most difficult part of counseling is the first step and you have accomplished it today. I will work hard so that you can experience positive change and growth in your life. We will work together to set goals for counseling. This is a collaborative relationship so that means we will consistently be looking at what is working for your and what isn't. I will continue to push outside your comfort zone and make small discoveries that may enhance your outlook. Call me today and we will begin your journey.

If you or someone you love are having problems related to alcohol or drug use, there is hope and a way out. It is most useful to meet with someone who truly understands addiction and can provide a true assessment. I will work with you, your family and any other healthcare providers to develop a plan of action based on your needs. Often times the road to recovery starts with meeting someone who listens to understand, meets you with genuine care and concern and can provide useful recommendations. Chemical dependency is a primary illness not a secondary mental health issue; trust a counselor who entered this specialty field.

I am a collaboratively oriented counselor. I believe that successful change is dependent on your enthusiastic participation in the process. I see myself as a sort of guide and someone who can offer alternative perspectives which may lead you to new ways of thinking about and acting on your circumstances. I believe that ultimately you contain the solutions to the things you bring to therapy. I will do my best to help you access those solutions and find your best possible outcome.

Are you ready to "talk to someone about it"? Is your mind and body so overwhelmed by your past and present experiences that you have symptoms of depression, anxiety, or physical and emotional disturbance? Could this have been brought on by childhood, deployment, first responder trauma, loss, or other life events? These are not uncommon. Life events can induce disturbances in our mood, relationships, and in the ability to effectively cope with day to day experiences. Developing coping skills, self-understanding, and addressing root cause can be among the first steps to self-healing and improved symptoms.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
