It is my pleasure to work with people from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. My 20 years in the military and five plus decades of living has taught me life can be complicated, and people often get overwhelmed. Rather than condemn them I prefer to help them on their journey to a better quality of life. One of the greatest pleasures in my life is seeing my clients overcome their struggles. Scheduling is typically quick same day appointments and multiple hour sessions are possible, but I don't file insurance due to the difficult nature of working with insurance companies.

Hello there. My name is John Trader and I have been a mental health counselor for over a decade. I am devoted to helping people with trauma be able to examine how it continues to affect their lives. I love to see breakthroughs with individuals and couples. I am passionate about creating safe spaces for people to explore neurodivergence and sexual identity. I am LGBTQIA+ and anti-racist. As a clinician, I believe that couples and individuals have the ability to work through life's difficulties by bringing safety and acceptance to the therapeutic process.

My ideal client might be someone who feels overwhelmed by the changes happening in their life, whether it's related to relationships, mental health, or identity. They likely seek support in navigating these challenges, desiring understanding, validation, and guidance to empower themselves to enact positive change. They want to feel heard, understood, and equipped with the tools to address their struggles autonomously.

Being a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas for many years, I have enjoyed a type of therapy that allows an individual to find freedom through acceptance of their issues rather than running from the reality of their existence. As we come to understand our past and how it has shaped us, we can then begin the practice of choosing differently for ourselves in the present and for our future. This search is a sacred process where therapist and client join together, rather than a therapy done 'to' you as a client. I would like to join in that process with you!

I am also on Medicare and live many of the difficulties that my fellow seniors find nearly instrumental.
My clients are on Medicare, are 65 or older, and have access to a smart device. They will be seen by Telehealth exclusively, and are from the state of Texas. Medicare clients across Texas who have a smart phone, laptop, computer, or iPad can connect with me.Medicare clients often suffer from loneliness, grief, anxiety or depression. These can be formidable challenges and can lead to a steep reduction in ones quality of life. This is especially true for Medicare clients in the LGBTQ community. My research documented the lives of 16 transgender persons. I have extensive experience with the transmasculine and transfeminine communities.

I believe that every person is immeasurably valuable, unique, and made in the image of the Creator. Sometimes having a compassionate therapist who will create a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to share your emotional burdens can be the greatest catalyst for personal change and growth. I am committed to giving my clients 100% of my attention, energy, and effort, because you are loved, valued, important to God, and to me as a therapist. Taking the first step of reaching out to a counselor can seem like the most difficult, but it may also be the decision that leads to life-changing growth, healing, and discovery.

Everyone is different and I incorporate many different treatment modalities.
Are you experiencing anxious feelings you just can't seem to shake? Maybe you feel like you have a dark cloud hanging over you and you don't really know why? I've been there! After learning how to overcome my own symptoms of depression, anxiety and anger, I became an LCSW and Certified Anger Management Specialist. I have experience in helping clients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues. I believe therapy is a collaborative effort and I look forward to passing my knowledge on to my clients so that they can start to live the kind of lives they want to live.

Your worry, your anxiety, and your fear has taken over your life. You are on edge often times without knowing why. The world feels dangerous and you are afraid. Your inner critic is harsh and unforgiving and it seems like you can never get it right. You are struggling to maintain work or your relationships are damaged and suffering. You feel unbalanced and not grounded, like you need to hold on to something sturdy or you might float away. The voice inside is on repeat saying "you aren't good enough," you're never going to get better," and "you don't deserve this."

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
