Additionally, I have over 25 years of experience as a therapist working alongside adults, children, adolescents, and families who have experienced trauma.
I believe you are exactly where you need to be.... Right now. Rumi said it best: "The wound is the place where the light enters you." The suffering, the vulnerability, the anger and the fear are perfect opportunities to shine a light of awareness and begin healing. I offer a safe space for each awareness to unfold without judgement. My approach tends to be ecclectic and holistic, incorporating spiritual practices to raise your consciousness in order to create alignment with your heart, body, and soul so that healing may begin.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I approach therapy with a deep understanding of the pervasive impact that trauma can have on individuals.
Do you have intrusive thoughts or conflicting thoughts that play over and over in your head, the desire to feel better mentally but you can't seem to get there. Hello, I'm Theresa, and my specialty is in supporting individuals, both adults and children over the age of 15, who have been affected by the complexities of life—trauma, domestic violence, medical conditions, and the profound depths of grief and bereavement. I understand the intricate paths of trauma, the complexities of domestic violence, the challenges posed by medical conditions, and the unique pain of grief and bereavement.

Being trauma-informed and identity-affirming is also incredibly important to me.
I work with individuals and couples seeking to deepen their relationship with self and others. In our work together, we identify the patterns of disconnection showing up in your life and in your relationships. We then work to better understand the underlying needs which are informing feelings, actions, and behaviors. Ultimately bringing unconscious stories into conscious awareness so that you are able to more intentionally show up, more effectively communicate, set healthy boundaries, and break free of survival and defense mechanisms which are keeping you stuck.

I have been providing anxiety, grief, stress, and trauma-informed psychotherapy to individual adults since 2013 starting in a residential addiction treatment setting before private practice and now teletherapy to men and women across the state of Texas.
Do you notice an increase in anxiety, fear, irritability, poor concentration, self-doubt, and/or struggle to navigate a loss? Are your ways of coping ineffective or maybe adding to your struggles? Is it hard to make sense of why your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and body are responding as they do, and even more confusing as to how to make it stop? Have you sought medical and pharmaceutical support but want to address the underlying ‘why’, not just numb out the symptoms? You want connection, a sense of belonging within yourself and with others, meaning, and wellness to thrive not just survive.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, trauma, body image, unhealthy relationship with food, or mental blocks, I will walk alongside you in this journey to thrive on and off the court! Serving Texas clients via teletherapy.
As athletes, it's easy to forget that if we don't mind our mental health, we can feel detached from ourselves, team, and loved ones. In the world of athletics, this happens all too often. Sometimes, we can turn to friends, family, mentors to help us turn it around. Other times, we need additional help. As a former Division 1 & professional athlete, as well as a coach at the club and collegiate levels, I provide a safe and empathetic space for athletes, coaches, and their families to work through challenges. After beginning this work at Baylor Athletics, I strive to continue investing in wellness for the athletic community.

Do you want to integrate your physical, emotional, and spiritual health? Trauma, chronic pain, substance use disorders (SUD) and other behavioral disorders impact all aspects of health. Many of my patients have a SUD - either active or in long term remission. Some of my patients are struggling with a physical diagnosis that is strongly connected to their emotions. It is not "all in your head", it is in your brain and your body. I can manage very complex medication regimens, but do not rely solely on medications. The goal is to support you in achieving joy and optimal function. You identify goals and I assist you in achieving them.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
