I believe you are exactly where you need to be.... Right now. Rumi said it best: "The wound is the place where the light enters you." The suffering, the vulnerability, the anger and the fear are perfect opportunities to shine a light of awareness and begin healing. I offer a safe space for each awareness to unfold without judgement. My approach tends to be ecclectic and holistic, incorporating spiritual practices to raise your consciousness in order to create alignment with your heart, body, and soul so that healing may begin.

I love getting to know and helping kids find their way in the world. Face it, sometimes we all need a bit more "staff" or "tribe" in our corner to navigate hard times. I believe this can be especially true for kids and teens.

I am especially committed to working with adolescents and young adults who have experienced childhood trauma, complicated family dynamics, anxiety, and neurodiversity.
Past traumatic experiences can significantly impact how we function in the present, affecting our relationships and overall sense of self. This can lead to feeling disconnected, stuck, or emotionally flooded. I aim to provide a safe space that encourages self-exploration for processing past wounds, ultimately leading to self-acceptance. Having worked in diverse settings such as schools, private practice, and the justice system, I understand that the human experience can be painful, and no one should have to endure this pain alone.

Hello, my name is Susanne Maynard. I work well with those experiencing anxiety, depression and grief. My biggest strengths are personal experience, a love of learning, and a willingness to try something new. I am always learning and growing. I believe my best work is done with those who have been wounded in the past, and are now ready to take charge of their personal healing journey. My approach is eclectic and tailored to each client, although the primary method I utilize is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We will explore together what you believe is keeping you 'stuck' and what you would like to change.

Being a caretaker comes with numerous demands that can be quite challenging. Managing responsibilities can be overwhelming and can lead to increased stress across all areas of your life. Providing care for others can lead to burnout, which in turn can cause you to experience feelings of depression and anxiety.. Many caregivers tend to overlook their own personal needs, leading to a worsening of their symptoms.

I particularly enjoy working with teens who are having a tough time. I have worked with teens struggling with identity issues, school attendance, and alcohol/drug dependency. Is your life a little overwhelming right now? Do you sometimes feel anxious or down, not knowing where to turn? If so, it might help to talk with someone who doesn't have an agenda, and only wants to walk with you during this difficult, confusing time. I'd like to talk with you about how you feel, and help you figure out what you need. We will determine what areas are troubling you, and where to begin!

I serve diverse adults (age 20+), specifically those who have alternative identities (artists, creatives, counter-culture, & minorities of all types) as well as other therapists. I provide a non-judgmental and understanding space for people who may have struggled engaging in therapy in the past due to feeling judged for being “weird” or “different”. My clients typically feel stuck in one or more areas of life (relationship, family, career, holistic health, identity, personal happiness, etc.) and are sometimes struggling with mood and/or anxiety disorders, substance abuse, maladaptive coping behaviors, unresolved traumas, etc.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
