Life's a journey, with many unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes we need someone to talk to, someone to share our thoughts and feelings, dreams and fears, and help guide us toward resolution. I want to help my clients navigate this path, and to also experience the possibilities of living their best life possible. I work with older teens and adults, and also specialize in women's issues across the lifespan, as well as those with health concerns. College students are a special interest, as are educators, as I’ve worked as a teacher and school counselor and understand the stress and dynamics associated with the profession.

Many of us are taught to disregard the messages our bodies and emotions carry, initiating a distrusting and confusing relationship with ourselves and others. My work often focuses on giving you the tools and felt experience to release trauma from your nervous system, create inner safety, connect to agency, establish healthy boundaries, and re-connect to your intuition. Together we’ll work to (re)discover your relationship with your true inner voice. Through this connection and awareness, you can learn to trust yourselves and navigate through life’s obstacles and challenges with flexibility and resilience.

A client once said that on the day of everyone's birth, they should be assigned a therapist for life. At some time in your life wouldn't it be nice to have someone validate you, completely accept you without judgment and be there when you feel you can't go on? Perhaps you'd begin to see your strengths, learn how to think positively and understand that you can move forward no matter your situation.

Hello! My name is Leah and I use she/her pronouns. I’ve been a practicing clinical social worker for over 10 years. I would describe my therapeutic approach as warm and collaborative with a focus on building safe and inclusive spaces that encourage curiosity, creativity, and insight. I believe in the importance of choice to establish a foundation on which clients can engage in therapy as their authentic selves and I value humor and transparency along the way.

We often hear “Tell your parents how you feel” or “Cut off your family; they’re toxic”? For many, these suggestions can feel overwhelming, especially when family dynamics are complicated. Communicating boundaries can be especially challenging in a cultural context where family ties run deep. How do you even tell your Hispanic parents what boundaries are? Let’s work together to figure out how you can fill your own cup before filling everyone else’s. The goal is not to do something you are not comfortable doing, but to learn how to interact with them without having to sacrifice your own emotional needs. Allow me to walk alongside you.

The life we live and the life we want do not always match up. Funny enough, life some times gets in the way of the life we want. I believe that we can live an authentic life with meaningful connections that makes suffering through hard stuff worth it. A person is more than their problems, thoughts, and feelings. I like to work with individuals on figuring out what kind of life they want, and how to persist through tough times to achieve it.

Deciding to take that first step to better yourself and change your life is tough when you are afraid the person you have chosen to help you just may not be able to or even understands your needs. As your therapist, I recognize wholeheartedly how important that first step is. Together, one of our focuses initially is building confidence, comfort, and rapport with each other, so that as we walk together through your issues, you can feel good about doing so. We will develop a plan of care specifically for your individual needs rather using than one specific method based on “identifying markers".

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
