Does it seem like everyone else have something figured and you are missing something? Are you feeling lost and confused about where to take your life? It can be hard to turn down all the noise of life's distractions (work, friends, family, etc) in order to really understand and articulate how you feel, what you need and what direction is best for you. My work with clients centers around taking a step out of their every day life to explore what is going right in their life and what needs to change. If you ready to make a change but you don't know where to begin, let's talk!

I help people recover from traumatic events and hurtful relationships. I enjoy working with adolescents to adults figure out what they want out of life, and remove the things that are holding them back. If you come from a messed up family, you will find that I offer unwavering support in an environment where you are deeply valued and exceptionally safe. I enjoy working with couples and individuals in nontraditional homes and relationships, parents at the end of their wits, couples about to call it quits, people recovering from religious abuse or neglect, and artists, musicians, and creatives.

I have specialized training in EMDR, relationship and family therapy, Gottman marital therapy, and Prepare/Enrich.
Although everyone who begins therapy hopes for a more satisfying life, people bring a variety of concerns to their first sessions. In your sessions with me, the emphasis will be on you. You'll find a comfortable place to explore your concerns and dreams and determine how to improve your experiences and relationships. I'll honor who you are--your cultural background, life choices, sexual orientation, and age. I'll offer support and feedback as you work through current and past issues and rediscover strengths that will help you move forward in a positive direction.

Learning why we do what we do is important, but then comes that key question of what to do with that information. My goal is to create a safe space for self-discovery, but also an active space, a brave space in which we explore new perspectives and frameworks for seeing. I specialize in relationship conflict, stagnation/burnout, depression, anxiety, religious trauma, and those who wish to work with and understand the different parts of themselves through an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective.

As far as anyone can tell, you’ve got a great marriage and life. You’re accomplished, always loving to each other and close with friends and family. But on the inside, you have never felt so alone. Over the years you have tried to rationalize, fix, and excuse your relationship growing apart, yet it is disheartening. Something just does not feel right anymore, and you begin to realize you feel like you have a roommate rather than a partnership. Maintaining a fulfilling and loving relationship can be a challenge in today's fast paced environment.

Therapy can transform both our inner and outer worlds by making sense of our stories, releasing what no longer works, and living more fully in the present. I do this work best with people who tend to identify as highly responsible, self-critical, and chronically nervous, tense, or guilty. You might identify as a perfectionist or people-pleaser, or say you "grew up too fast." Common goals include getting in touch with alienated parts of the self, freedom from self-criticism, healing from emotional abuse or neglect, navigating difficult relationships with family, and relief from symptoms of PTSD, OCD, anxiety disorders, or depression.

I have helped couples and individuals heal outdated beliefs and attitudes about themselves and relationships by looking at their family of origin.
I have helped couples for 30 years to transform their relationship using Imago Relationship Therapy. I teach couples a communication skill set that foster emotional maturity and respect. This changes relationships. Being in relationship can be challenging during the second stage of relationship when the newness recedes and irritations begins. The Imago model increases consciousness and healing around the origins of conflict. This awareness empowers couples in their ability to change so they are no longer victims to dysfunctional patterns. I incorporate a psycho-spiritual approach in my Imago work as well as individual counseling.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
