My ideal clients want change, but they aren't sure it's possible. If they know it's possible, maybe they're frustrated things aren't different yet. I specialize in working with adults and young adults experiencing anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and co-occurring depression. Partially due to my past as a lawyer, I have significant experience working with individuals in high-stress, professional careers and highly technical fields. Also, I'm neurodiversity-affirming and enjoy helping adults explore the significance of late life diagnosis.

Many of my clients have experienced oppression and discrimination in a variety of forms.
I will demonstrate a full and accepting understanding of your difficulties, and I will listen keenly and show complete respect. I work to make sessions time-effective, frequent when needed and intermittent when feasible. We'll collaborate toward pragmatic solutions, and work toward your goals, not mine. I will challenge you and exert "gentle" pressure at times. I check regularly on how you feel about the therapy process and our working relationship. The quality of our working relationship is fundamental. We expect problems to arise at times, and we take care of them right away.

I’ve been a licensed psychotherapist for many years and now retired. Over the span of my career, I’ve worked with children, adults and families to help them achieve a higher quality of life. This is why people seek out therapy. I recognize when people experience symptoms of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, adult ADHD, depression, stress, or struggles that arise in work, friends, close/marital and family relationships can often lead to feeling trapped. If you’re seeking help to overcome these challenges that stand in the way of living the quality of life you want, I can help.

The struggles that we deal with on a daily basis can be a heavy enough burden to carry, and when we compound these with life transitions, or any other past trauma, it can be completely overwhelming. Stressors at home with family or loved ones, difficulties at school, challenges at work, or life transitions are difficult to navigate, and sometimes we may benefit from seeking help professionally. I'm here to help!

As hu man beings we thrive when we are connected to our true self, other people, and the natural world of which we are a part.
We can’t get around suffering sometimes in this life, but we can learn to live with dignity and grace, and we can know joy. Whether you are having questions of a spiritual nature, feeling stuck in your life, or needing to be free of deep and abiding pain, I stand ready to walk with you on the path of healing. I can say this with confidence because I have made this journey myself. My own experience with therapy helped me to understand that hu man beings are not machines that break and need to be fixed. They are beings that course correct; they mold and are molded by their environment.

If you feel like you are expected to “do it all” and carry more responsibilities than others in your life, and feel like you need a break, I may be able to help. Some people find that their personal relationships, either with friends, family, or co-workers, seem shallow, one-dimensional, or unequal. If you would like to improve your relationship with yourself and others, this may be something we can work on together. People may find themselves noticing that they keep engaging in relationships that wound them and wonder “is there something wrong with me?” We can answer that question together.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
